Meet Jennifer Chester

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Chester.

Jennifer, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was born into a military family. I spent my first ten years living on Vandenberg Air Force Base, located in Santa Barbara County, CA. Vandenberg Air Force Base is a US Space Command base, well known for launching spacecraft and performing Intercontinental Ballistic Missile testing. As a girl, I spent many hours watching satellites and other deliverables launch into space. I later moved to Federal Way, WA, where I attended Decatur High School. While At Decatur, I excelled at math and science. I was also a member of the Decatur HS Wind Ensemble. In high school is where I discovered my love for technology. I became increasingly interested in how things worked and how technology could make life easier. In 2009 I decided to join the US Air Force, where I met the aptitude requirement and completed training to become an Avionics Specialist. As an Avionics Technician, I performed tests, preventive maintenance, and sensitive aircraft calibrations of the following systems: Aircraft communication, Search radar Acoustic sensing Infra-red radar Electronic warfare Navigation.

As a result of my technical training, I began a career as a Biomedical Equipment Technician. I have worked with companies such as Becton Dickinson, Roche, and Medavators. My current employer is Convergent Dental. Convergent Dental is a dental laser company that is making significant innovations that are changing the face of dental technology. As a single mom with a demanding schedule while raising two outstanding children, I have used technology to gain significant efficiencies. NextJenn Techmom has become a forum for busy parents can share innovative ideas and strategies. Our company offers a user-friendly common-sense approach to complex technology. NextJenn assists clients with overcoming the fear and anxiety associated with technology. When working in the field of medical equipment, I realized that many people don’t want to know all of the specs. They just want to know what does it do and how does it benefit them. Most of us are apprehensive about using what we don’t understand, and this is where Nextjenn Techmom was born.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
This road has been far from smooth. I have suffered many challenges. For example, as a black female in technology, I have had to work twice as hard as some of my colleagues to prove my ability.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
