Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Jones.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jennifer. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I wanted to start a business but didn’t know exactly what type of business to start. One day I was complaining to a friend about the cost of STEM camps. I wanted my daughter to attend but I didn’t want to shell out the money. I paid for her to attend but to say the least I wasn’t happy. I wanted her to have the experience to see if this was a field that she would even consider pursuing.
The camp was awesome but come to find out my daughter was more into the arts. Which was just fine, I could finally let go of my dream of her following in my footsteps of going into a STEM field. Even though my daughter wasn’t interested didn’t mean that there weren’t other little techies out there, so I decided to start a computer hardware with an intro to coding camp for kids for a more affordable price.
The camp curriculum is based off of the CompTIA A+. We believe if we introduce this topic early, that our students will choose to pursue a CompTIA A+ certification. These certifications do not require a college degree and are a better option for jobs while in college or right after high school. These certifications offer a better starting pay then minimum wage and there are still so many opportunities to pursue additional higher-level certifications with CompTIA such as Cisco, networking, web design, etc
Has it been a smooth road?
I think there is a learning curve for every entrepreneur and mine hit me the first year with the building cost. I rented a space and wasn’t expecting it to eat most of my profit. We were able to recoup the second year but those are the types of unexpected expenses that happen and you must be ready. I suggest having a mistake fund to cover fees and other unexpected items.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Computer Tech Camp is pretty much a camp on wheels. We take our computer hardware with an intro to coding camp two different schools and events. We always host at least one camp during the summer in the Katy/Cypress area.
We have worked with Texas Southern University’s summer programs for high school students were we created websites in HTML. The students also worked as technicians, breaking down the computers to just the shell and then reassembling them. It’s always a pleasure to see young minds think outside the box and create. The students and I are constantly learning from each other!
What sets us apart is that we offer scholarship spots each year to students who may not be able to afford camp but want to be a Computer Tech Camp techie. We are constantly looking for sponsors to sponsor our techies. We don’t want to turn any child away that wants to attend.
