Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeremiah Johnson.
Jeremiah, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Well, I was born in Houston, Texas to Jimmie and Gloria Johnson. They always pushed me to be successful in life and made sure that I had the means to do so. There were seven of us in the house (including my brother whom we would later adopt). Growing up was interesting lol. I went to a private school until 3rd grade and was homeschooled until I finished high school. My family sold our brand new home in Pearland and moved to Africa to do missionary work. I lived there for three years! It was an amazing experience, and it taught me to be thankful for what I have and to give back to the community.
I am currently residing in Houston, Texas where I work at Behavioral hospital with children and adolescents. I enjoy my job (did I just say that). Well, I enjoy putting smiles on children’s faces as much as I can. It is a VERY stressful job and takes a lot of prayer and patience. Working there inspired me to become a foster parent. I left there and supervised a group home where I met my son. I fell in love with him and knew that I had to do whatever I could to get him out of the system. I worked at it and became a licensed foster/adopt parent. My son was officially adopted this year, and I was also blessed to foster a 3-year-old little girl whom I have become so attached to!
I am currently the piano player for The Source West (First Methodist Houston). I am a part of an AWESOME team of unique individuals! We all come from different backgrounds, but it is absolutely amazing to see how we come together as a family! In between fostering and being a dad, I also am a freelance graphic designer as well as a fashion consultant. I also make custom accessories in my free time. Currently, I am working on releasing an instrumental album early next year entitled “Speechless.”
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
HA! Smooth is not included in the adjectives that I would use to describe my journey. Becoming a father of a child with mental disabilities is CHALLENGING.
You have to really have patience. I’ve lost most of my hair due to dealing with children with mental disabilities lol. But all in all, I love them with all my heart, and I know that the struggles that we go through now will be temporary.
I’m currently in the process of finding a bigger home to accommodate my plans of doing foster care full time.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would have pushed myself harder and worked on overcoming my insecurities a lot sooner. With the help of my spiritual father William Johnson, I was able to shift my perspective into positive, productive thinking.
A lot of the things that he taught me brought back the principles my parents instilled in me as a young boy. I guess at some point, I lost those principles and needed some redirection.
