Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeremy Becton.
Hi Jeremy, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I have always known I wanted to get into film since I was a child. My favorite movies ranged from Power Rangers and Ninja Turtles to Friday and Scream. During my tenure at Prairie View A&M University, I worked as a Videographer Intern with the Communications Department, which is where I was able to strengthen my passion for media.
I recorded and streamed Campus events including sports games, speeches, and festivals. After I graduated, I decided to use my skills to help local businesses with Photography, Videography, Web Design, and Marketing Strategies. I currently reside in Houston as a Film Producer, Writer, and Director, preparing for more releases in 2022.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One of my biggest struggles was putting together my first film project, BLACK. At the time, I thought writing and completing the film was going to be the hardest part. But then, I had to go through location scouting, auditions, rehearsals, purchasing props, budgeting, and rehearsals.
All of these obstacles took a toll on me, but my team helped me overcome to the finish line.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a Film Writer. I specialize in Narrative stories reflecting on relatable yet immersive black characters. I am most proud of the fact that I actually STARTED, something that I feel a lot of young artists like myself struggle with often.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I feel that the film industry is currently still at the beginning of the next big shift, which is the progress of streaming services. Since more major movies are debuting on the streaming services, I feel that independent filmmakers will find it very easy to much their projects to more audiences on them as well.
