Meet Jesse Stowers of Happy Earth Compost

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jesse Stowers.

Jesse, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
In 2019, I hit my tipping point when I realized my family was generating more than a bag of trash per day! This was after we separated out recycling. It hit me that if every family is doing the same, my three kids and future generations beyond them would be overwhelmed by trash.

I set out to find a way to reduce our footprint. After some research, I discovered composting. This could provide the solution. After a couple of weeks of trying it at home, I quickly realized that I didn’t want to do this on my own. I didn’t have the time or the patience and I wanted to include as much as possible in the compost. For example, meat, dairy, and other products that are no-no’s for home composting.

I realized at this point, that if I was having this issue, there had to be others. After some research, my hunch was verified. So, I set about looking for a commercial compost company to gauge interest in helping residential customers compost. New Earth Compost was extremely excited with the concept and agreed to help us implement this service. We are extremely excited to bring this service to Houston and I hope you will join us in making the Earth a little bit happier!

Has it been a smooth road?
There have definitely been challenges but these are good things. Each challenge has been due to how fast we have grown, trying to keep up has required adding team members, optimizing work schedules, and purchasing a new vehicle. This has allowed us to continue to meet our growth. It has been a lot of fun. With growth comes new challenges and coming up with solutions is the fun part!

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Customers sign up for either our weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly pickup service and we provide them with their Happy Earth buckets. Each week, they fill their indoor bin with the approved compostable waste. Then, as needed, transfer the waste to the outdoor bucket. On the designated pickup day, set the bucket out on your doorstep, or porch and we will swap it out with a clean one. And, for our customers interested, we provide free compost upon request! We also provide a drop-off alternative.

I am most proud of how easy we have made it for customers to compost. They are definitely barriers to doing this on your own and we have setup a process to make it easy for everyone. We aren’t sustainability experts; we are just a normal family trying to do our part! We also provide fun monthly bucket surprises. We collaborate with local business and provide a product that is good for us or is sustainable.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
This is a great place for our business to start. I attribute that to the people of our great city. Our city is eager to do things for our city and our world. To improve, in addition to trying our service, people can look for ways to get more involved in improving sustainability. Everyone has to do their part to project the city and world for future generations.
