Today we’d like to introduce you to Jhacole LeGrand-Dunn.
Jhacole, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Root & Fleurish Salon was established in the summer of 2016 and was born out of a desire for a creative outlet after I’d served as an educator for more than 16 years in Houston and surrounding areas.
My experiences as a wearer of natural hair coupled with the day to day trials of caring for and styling children with natural hair lead me to a number of discoveries, pitfalls and epiphanies that ultimately developed my passion for the myriad textures of tresses and the countless ways to care for and style them. My day to day activities in caring for the hair of myself and my family eventually became a hobby as I assisted friends and family in their hair care activities.
As my work as an educator and administrator increased and became more demanding I began seeking knowledgeable stylists as well as a quality salon experience specific to natural hair needs, though I eventually found stylists and the salon experience I’d longed for, I quickly learned that the options were quite limited. I knew early on that I wanted to add to this number.
When I made the decision to embark on a new career path in 2016, the dream of Root & Fleurish became a reality.
Has it been a smooth road?
My background in education and the research that often accompanied my work were very helpful to my gaining a better understanding of hair care and styling. However, the more I learned…the more I realized that I’d never stop learning.
The decision to open a salon so quickly after changing careers, came with a number of challenges. The first of which was developing a solid business plan, then establishing myself as an entrepreneur and gaining clientele all of which were totally new and foreign to me.
Though I sought to fill what I felt was a void in the beauty/hair care industry, the fact remained that establishing myself and the salon in a city as large as Houston would not be easy. In addition to this, while I’d attended cosmetology school and received the necessary licenses, there was much to learn about starting and owning a salon…I’m still learning and I don’t anticipate that will end.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Root & Fleurish Salon – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Root & Fleurish is a natural hair and wellness salon that seeks to provide clients with a salon experience that surpasses traditional salon and beauty and styling services by encouraging clients to enjoy the full range of options available for natural hair styling while maintaining hair and scalp health.
It’s really important to me that our clients feel special and that their appointments are more of an experience, from the aroma therapy you encounter as you enter to the organic shampoo used as well as the conversations we have around your specific hair care and styling needs and desire.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
What I love about our city is its diversity, I believe it’s what strengthens Houston and makes it amazing. We truly are a melting pot with opportunities to learn and engage with different cultures regularly.
Our constant growth often comes with the price of traffic and congestion that makes it difficult to capture attention and business to areas outside of metropolitan Houston.
