Today we’d like to introduce you to Jim McVaugh.
Jim is one of the premiere custom home builders in the United States. Since 1990, his career has been comprised of real estate investment, development, and custom home building. His focus has been on constructing the finest single family and multi-family residences in Houston. This has gained him his reputation for innovation and a generation of success. With the drive and spirit of an entrepreneur, he is always looking for better and more efficient ways to scale his business.
He was born in California and grew up in San Antonio, Texas. After high school he moved to Houston where he pursued his degree in Finance and worked as an Accountant. He then joined O&D Developments as an Asset Manager and was responsible for managing over 900 multi-family residential units, more than 500,000 square feet of retail shopping centers, and various parcels of raw land.
He launched McVaugh Custom Homes in 1994 and over the years, the business has continued to grow. Today it stands as one of the most premiere luxury building companies in the Houston market. Jim McVaugh is a proud recipient of numerous awards, including being named “America’s Best Builder” by the National Association of Home Builders. McVaugh Custom Homes is well known in the marketplace and is synonymous with quality, prestige, and stability.
Has it been a smooth road?
The most difficult part of the home building business is dealing with economic events that are out of your control. The most memorable of these events being the 2008 financial crisis. We had 90 homes under construction, 60 being speculative homes, with an average sales price of $800,000. Although many builders ended up going bankrupt we were able to dig ourselves out of the recession over a 5 year period. The most recent slowdown has been somewhat localized due to Houston’s prominence as an oil city. Oil dropped from over $100 a barrel down to the mid-20’s and halted sales significantly. The key to surviving these economic fluctuations is to be proactive in selling existing inventory homes, be willing to adjust your product to the market demands, and conserve capitol when times are good.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with McVaugh Custom Homes – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We specialize in move up and hi-end custom homes. Additionally, we are well known for our +/- 10 acre boutique developments. These communities take the best of our multi-million dollar custom homes and bring the price point down for the masses to enjoy. I am most proud of our team members, many of whom have been with us for over 15 years. Their dedication and loyalty means the world to me. Additionally, I am proud to have won numerous industry awards such as Americas Best Builder by the NAHB, the only Texas builder to win a 2107 Gold Award, and Houston’s development of the year.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
There are so many things to love about Houston: the year round warm weather, a great restaurant on every corner, friendly people, diverse and growing population, massive amounts of opportunity, inexpensive housing, no zoning, and there is no shortage of land. Although Houston is a great city to live in, it’s not an ideal tourist destination. There are few must see attractions, the traffic is terrible (coming from someone born in LA), and the rainy season makes building homes quickly a challenge.
