Meet Jim Scott of Tattoo Shop in Friendswood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jim Scott.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I grew up in a family surrounded by artists in the Houston area. My uncle Tom Jones was the curator of the Art Car Museum here in Houston. My aunt Barbara Jones was a well-known and respected artist/painter in the Houston area and growing up around all these different types of art kinda inspired me to do what I do today. I have always been fascinated with the human body and anatomy and believe it is one of the best mediums for art as nobody’s body, skin, and features are the same.

This makes every piercing or body modification a little different and more unique on every person. When I got out of the military, I had a friend who owned a tattoo shop here in Houston and just started to hang out and spend all my time there and that eventually Let me to become an apprentice. I started off piercing and eventually started doing human suspensions, and that quickly evolved into doing scarifications and other body modification procedures.

Every time I went a step farther and undertook one of these procedures I was amazed by how much you can do with a human body as a medium for art. I enjoy all aspects of my art and mediums from piercing little children’s ears for their first time to adorning people’s genitalia for more sensations and decoration and doing scarifications on people who want to have art on their body’s that different than most others.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The art I enjoy does come with its struggles as piercings and body modifications are not a necessity. Sometimes business is bustling, and sometimes it’s hard, and I have to scrape by. Being an artist is like being a drop in the ocean, but I would not trade it for anything. I absolutely love what I do and will do anything to be able to adore people’s bodies to their liking.

Piercing has been around long before I got here and will definitely be around long after I am gone. Some of the more extreme body modifications aren’t for everyone but is growing in popularity. I just believe there needs to be more education about these procedures and it can possibly open more people’s minds up to them.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Tattoo Shop – what should we know?
I work at a small tattoo shop in Friendswood called Tattoo Shop. I am the artist in the area that other tattoo shops refer their clients to if what they want is quite challenging or if their clients are wanting better, higher-end jewelry such as implant grade titanium or gold.

I am a body piercer, and I am also one of a very small number of artist that do scarification and more extreme procedures around Houston. I try to offer my clients more options for jewelry; and jewelry of better quality than other shops in the area.

I also try to educate my clients in proper aftercare techniques and jewelry placement/quality, so they have a better understanding of what they are getting them selfs into and how to better care for their piercings/modifications.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Doing the art, I do you have to be able to read your client as you are sticking needles and cutting into their body and it hurts. I try to be as calming as I can be and talk them through the procedures to help calm them and make it a pleasant experience for them.
