Today we’d like to introduce you to Joan Moody.
Joan, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Hello! I am Joan Moody and my business is Joan Of Art. Since I was very young, I have been practicing art. I was taking private art lessons at 10 years old. At Texas Tech University I received dual degrees in art and an all-level lifetime teaching certification in art education.
After teaching art to over 15,000 students in public schools over 14 yrs, it was time for a change. Starting Joan of Art has allowed me more time to paint, mentoring growing artists, and teach private lessons.
My own art is anchored in strong design and uses values of limited color and mark-making. The melding of light, shapes and color invites the viewer’s eye to wander around each painting. The longer you look, the more you will see.
I have won some local awards and enjoy supporting the Pearland Chamber of Commerce with various projects. The latest is a large 3D pear to be mounted next to a state-of-the-art part for special needs kids. A first of its kind. By accepting the project, I agreed to do so as long as some of those special needs artists could come and work with me. We had a blast! The project should be completed this spring.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
If you are an artist, you have obstacles. New challenges. Fears rise up. I have not coached any artists wanting to grow that have not struggled with what I call “the internal mean voice” saying you can’t….. or you don’t have enough experience to……. Learning to step forward with courage in the midst of fear is huge.
My desire is to provide a safe place for artists to risk, to try and sometimes fail. And to succeed! Ask any competitive sports player. How do you get better? Play with someone better than you. Seek help from those who have more experience. Everyone needs someone to mentor/coach them.
I LOVE being a mentor/coach to a working artist who wants to grown. I would welcome a conversation if you are interested in making a commitment to have some fun and be courageous. You will be surprised what is possible.
Several artists who I have coached have been award-winning artists.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My work is about layering and texture. I usually begin with gesso building layers of acrylic, then oils and sometimes cold wax. My work mantra is “Show Up and Dive In”.
The creative process is life-giving and I know my soul isn’t happy until I spend time painting, drawing or creating.
Any big plans?
Since Covid, I am coaching more artists in person or in other states using Zoom and loving it. I will continue to paint and teach private lessons.
My greatest hope is to connect with practicing artists who want to dream and grow as an artist. I am not a big, flashy art firm. In my own life, it’s been mentors that have deeply influenced me. As the owner of Joan Of Art, I will personally and regularly connect with you. I am looking for artists who need someone committed to coming alongside you (wherever you are in your art journey). Contact me through my website or FB. Joanmoodyartist.com.
Coaching artists is what I feel made to do for a long, long time. Look me up and schedule a time to meet. I look forward to meeting with you as well as listening to your needs and dreams as an artist.
