Today we’d like to introduce you to Jobie Anderson.
Jobie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was a stay at home mom for several years with three very active boys. As they got closer to HS graduation, I was always thinking of something I could do. I had always worked in the mental health arena and that wasn’t an option for me anymore. I volunteered at schools on every level and really hated the thought of not being involved with the community.
I had a friend in the Dallas area with a popcorn shop. I thought of her. I brought the idea to my husband and he thought it was a great idea. I called my friend and she consulted me. Over a year’s time, I just put one foot in front of the other until I found myself with my own popcorn shop. I was terrified. I had never owned a business. I opened right at the start of the busy season. I was working 15-18 hours a day, completely overwhelmed but never stopping. I hired my brother as the cook. He was cooking 60-80 hours a week. It felt as if we were in over our heads but over the past six years, we have learned, grown and come to love what we do. Turns out, I’m even more involved with the community and the schools than I ever was before. I’ve met so many great people. Customers who become friends. It’s a happy place and we want people to leave with a smile. To be treated with kindness and to provide the best popcorn. We have been open over six years now. I’m still in awe when I see the store busy. Often, you’ll find my mom working as well. It’s family and it’s friends. And it’s even greater popcorn.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The biggest struggle was in the beginning not knowing what to expect and running out of popcorn. Not being able to cook fast enough to keep our bins full of all of our 50+ flavors. I find myself not looking at struggles as struggles but as blessings. We may be overwhelmed and working long hours, but we’re busy.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with What’s Poppin Popcorn – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We are a gourmet popcorn shop specializing in over 50 flavors of popcorn made from scratch with the best ingredients. We have Kettle, Caramel, Candied, Popcorn with Nuts and Chocolate Popcorn. We also make several different flavors and colors of cotton candy. We offer eight bag sizes for all occasions. (Birthdays, weddings, baby showers, school events, sporting events, marketing tools….). We also offer popcorn tins and gift boxes. We are not a franchise so we are not limited. We love getting creative for special events with our customers. We offer kindness, friendliness and the best popcorn. We are a family business. I’m most proud of the people I work with who genuinely care about our customers and bringing a smile and making them feel welcome when they are in our shop. One unique fun stop in our shop is our Wall of Fame! Pictures of customers, awards, letters, drawings and public appearances. Family (I have three boys. A high school football player, college football player and NFL player) Customers are surprised to see themselves or people they know on the wall.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
At the moment, I still put family first so any ideas I have I’m holding for the right moment. But for now, we will continue to create new and unique made from scratch flavorful popcorn.
