Today we’d like to introduce you to Jocelyn Garza.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jocelyn. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Ever since I can remember, I’ve had a dream to own my own business. I never decided on what I wanted to do but that dream lived in my head for many many years. I had so many ideas on things I was interested in to start my own business but I never moved forward since I wanted to graduate with my Bachelors first. I have a degree in bilingual education for K-6th grade but I did a 360 my last semester before I graduated in May 2019. I had my daughter October of 2018 & she has been my greatest motivation and inspiration to do what I’ve always wanted to do. From one day to another I said to myself “Let’s do this! I can do it!” & well Once Upon A Bowtique came alive! Never in a million years would I imagine that my business would be making handmade bows for newborns, infants, toddlers and children! It began with my baby, I was obsessed on how the big bows looked on her and I decided to share our style with the rest of the mommys out there. I love doing what I do and I am so happy I get to do this from home while taking care of my daughter. I started in March of this year but I have been rapidly growing and I’m so excited for what the future holds for my mini CEO & myself.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Definitely not but I am grateful for every struggle that I have encountered through the process of starting my business and what I will continue to come across along the way. It has not been easy by any means but I do believe that those struggles shape you and make you a better business owner. I spent hours daily researching and purchasing the right material that I wanted to use for the bows. When I first began in March I had no idea what to expect, I opened my shop on Instagram and I just went with the flow. We love taking photos so I would take photos of my baby and promote my self on my page.
Orders began coming in, more and more every day. It was hard, I would go to sleep at 4 am every night trying to finish orders. I did not have much room back in March so I’d work from my room. My baby was smaller then and so I would try to find balance between baby, school and running my business. I’m happy to say it’s a smoother routine now, I have grown and learned so much in such a short time. But I still face struggles, long nights, stressful days, busy, etc. but I always try to stay positive even when it gets hard! Nothing worth having comes easy, right?
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Once Upon A Bowtique & Co story. Tell us more about the business.
We love BIG bows around here! The bigger the better! I once heard “the bigger the bow the better the mom!” & oh how I can relate. I specialize in hand tied headwraps for newborns and big children. I also have a variety of different style bows I hand-make. I love having a wide variety of colors and prints to have something for everyone. So I guess you can say I’m known for the big bows, they are such a fashion statement & so unique that they catch everyone’s attention. My mommy customers are always telling me how many compliments they receive when they are out wearing their bows & that just makes my heart smile. Creating a product that is loved and wanted by so many is such an amazing feeling. I love children and I love that I still incorporate children in my business since I am not teaching right now.
As a business owner, I always strive to provide the best customer service to all my clients, I am always available to answer questions or concerns and help in the best possible way. That is definitely one thing that you can expect from my small business, I like to be involved with my mommy and even dad customers!
What sets me apart from others is that I love working alongside my daughter. Yes, she may not be able to help me make bows or answer emails or none of that (she mostly helps me in throwing the fabric across the room lol) but she is a huge part of who we have become. Without her, this couldn’t of been possible so building our little empire together is so rewarding as a mother and daughter duo
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Good or bad luck… well I believe I have been extremely blessed and hard work pays off. So to answer the question, I feel like the luckiest person 🙂 I continue to work hard everyday, being a successful business owner is not an easy job it’s a 24/7 job with a baby on your lap and a house to maintain, it never ends and there’s always room for growth and improvement. I do believe I am a few of the lucky ones with the amount of business I received from the start & humbled to say that it hasn’t slowed down. I want to be my daughters biggest role model & becoming successful in the brand I am building is what I’m trying to show her when she grows up, that anything she dreams or wishes for can come true. #girlsruntheworld.

This makes me so happy. To see a hard working mom striving for her dreams, while multitasking with her baby and household work is inspirational. Women can do anything!
