Today we’d like to introduce you to Joey Garza.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
As a pharmacist with a love for design, I wanted to create a meaningful product. I’ve always been drawn to graphic design. In 2014, I created a Houston t-shirt company with my best friend called Joey & Jaime. It was then that I learned how to use Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.
After we closed our company, I knew my life as an entrepreneur had only begun. I love to travel. So, I decided that my next foray into the fashion world would be bags. I played around with logos and made a list of features I’d want in a bag. It wasn’t until I was working in the pharmacy one night looking at a medication capsule that the ambitious idea came to fruition. It was then that I knew I would create a capsule-shaped bag. I always want to create products that are meaningful and tell a story.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has not always been a smooth road. The idea for my bag started three years ago. I had never pursued something so ambitious and so out of my realm. I didn’t know how to navigate the world of bag manufacturers or how to find someone to create my first sample.
Along the way it has definitely been a bumpy road. One filled with uncertainty and the feeling of defeat. I was on such a high after successfully completing my first Kickstarter campaign in 2018. I accomplished something that I only dreamt about but little did I know the manufacturer I lined up would fall through. I contemplated returning everyone’s pledges and apologizing, but I had a voice buried deep down that told me to continue problem-solving. It took a couple of months and tireless nights but I finally found a liaison who would eventually help to produce my first run.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Capsule Bag – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
Capsule Bag is known for its unique capsule-shaped design. It was important for me to create a product that is very functional but minimal in design.
The story behind my product sets us apart from other bag companies. Incorporating my love for medicine into the design enabled me to create a conversation piece. During pop-ups, people instantly notice the shape of the bag/logo and immediately ask why. From there, I am able to explain that I’m a pharmacist and dive deeper into my story and why I began Capsule Bag.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love that Houston is the melting pot of America. Growing up in a small city, you’re not exposed to many cultures beyond your own. In Houston, you can travel a few miles and feel like you’re a world away.
I do wish Houston was a more walkable city. I’ve seen a few initiatives in place to make it more pedestrian-friendly so I think the city will get there eventually.
