Meet John King of JK Welding in Cypress

Today we’d like to introduce you to John King.

Thanks for sharing your story with us John. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started to weld in 1990 and it wasn’t ltoo ong after I started that I was recognized for leadership and talent.

At a young age I traveled the world to places like Singapore and Moscow as a welder, a refractory man and boiler maker.  I became an AC mechanic in 1995 for a school district and finally ended up at a local forging company in Cypress in 1996 TX.

After working for Cameron Iron Works for 8 years, my boss told me that I had too much talent and I needed to have my own business.  I was inspried by his words and encouragement so I purchased my first welding rig in 2004.  Little did I know that this would be one of many I would buy.

In the beginning, I kept my job working for a large forging company while I worked with local horse doctors to make stalls, cowboy furniture, deer hunting blinds and feeders in my garage. My side business became so busy that I was burning the candle on both ends and came to the realization that I needed to quit my job.  On May 1st 2005, I took the leap of faith, quit my job and officially ventured out on my own.

I started by stopping by every job site I saw and handing out business crads.  I passed out flyers at the local grocery stores, Wal Marts and even faxed flyers on Sundays to local businesses I thought could use my services.  I started to get a lot of leads and the work was flying in so I took another leap and rented a 1200 Sq ft shop.  I worked there welding and fabricating while making houses calls to people when needed.

After 6 months, I had to get a larger shop and more employees so we moved into a 4600 Sq ft shop. A year after that, we took over the entire building and was now occupying a10,000 Sq ft shop.  I bought 2 more welding rigs and then was hired to rebuild the Kemah boardwalk when Hurricane Ike hit Houston in 2008.

My company started to grow into the industrial side of the welding business and I did more commercial work than anything.  We did over 500 restaurants in the Houston area and started to  get involved with some oil field work. I bought more equipment, more welding rigs and over the years hired more and more employees. The company was growing and I was learning a lot about people and business.

After nearly 6 years, I bought 4 acreas on FM 529 in Cypress in prepration for the next steps.  Three years later, we broke ground on that 4 acres with a state of the art facility in a 20,000 Sq ft building.

This new building allowed us to grow and get to the next level.  Our space offers a 4,000 Sq FT office, conference room, material staging area, saw area for cutting all the material, pipe department, separate climate controlled aluminum and stainless tig shop, tool room, lay down yard and plenty of parking.

We currently have 40 employees on staff and now we are ASME & DNV certified, however, we just recently became ISO 9001 certified and we are still growing after 12 years.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Biggest factors are keeping honest and loyal employees that do good work.

I believe Henry Ford once said ; A company that makes only money is a poor company . Always make room in your plans for God to be first in a business plan .
