Meet John Leggett of On Point Custom Homes in River Oaks

Today we’d like to introduce you to John Leggett.

John, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I grew up in North Carolina, where my father owned a construction company. I made an effort to tag along with him to work where he taught me the ins and outs of the construction business. This gave me an appreciation for watching the initial design transform and come to life throughout the actual build process. Aside from loving the result of creating a brand new, unique space, I loved the joy that customers had when they saw their finished home and could move in. While this was something I wanted to experience all the time, my parents had also introduced me to the financial markets at a young age, and I discovered a passion for finance. After college, I moved to Houston to pursue a career in investment banking, but a few years later, I decided to leave my financially secure, six-figure job behind to follow my dream of starting my own business in Houston. I began investing in real estate by purchasing several rental properties, and my venture into property management quickly inspired a desire to do more. Soon after beginning this new venture, I acquired my first piece of land in Houston, which soon became the place I designed and built my first home, and it was a modern home.

At the time, solid modern design was not prevalent in the market, but it was something I loved and wished there was more of. Since 2005, On Point Custom Homes has made a dramatic impact on Houston’s landscape and the design of many neighborhoods. Everyone thought I was doomed to fail when I first started designing and building modern homes for Houston homebuyers. While this design was rare, I felt there was a niche demand that needed to be filled, and On Point Custom Homes was the company that did fill that demand. Modern style has grown significantly in the Houston area throughout the last 12 years, and I know that the work my company has done has played a major role in its popularity growth. Making an impact on the architecture landscape of the nation’s fourth largest city is rewarding beyond words.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Starting my first business when I was 26 years old and still working in the investment banking field was a challenge. The decision to walk away from a secure six-figure job with benefits, vacation time and ample amounts of opportunity to grow both personally and financially was a difficult and stressful one for me. Additionally, being CEO at the young age of 26 proved to be a challenge with gaining respect from my clients in an industry where longevity and experience is crucial. They wanted the confidence that my team was equipped with the knowledge, experience, commitment and, most importantly, financial longevity to excel in the building industry. While I couldn’t change my age, I made sure to outwork the competition and hold On Point Custom Homes and its employees to the highest standards. My team and I have overcome these obstacles by outworking the competition, over-delivering on clients’ expectations and being a leader in the Houston building industry.

Please tell us about On Point Custom Homes.
On Point Custom Homes is one of the leading luxury custom home builders in Houston. We specialize in designing and building one-of-a-kind modern and traditional homes in Houston’s inner-city landscape. From the first consultation to picking out furniture and paint colors, our internal team takes the extra step to guide our clients through the entire home building process. We provide homebuyers with an in-house design build team to ensure their dream home comes alive on budget and on time.

Our mission is to provide unmatched customer service while building top-of-the-line custom homes. One of the things that sets us apart from others is our drive to stay ahead of the curve – we make it a point to introduce the latest and greatest building techniques, including the newest technologies and design software, intro the construction process of our homes.

Outside of our professional accomplishments, I am extremely proud of my team’s contributions to the community. The On Point team constantly seeks opportunities to give back to the community, utilizing our skills or resources for good. Two examples include Habitat for Humanity and the Ronald McDonald House of Houston. For 10 years, On Point Custom Homes has worked with Habitat for Humanity, donating salvageable building materials, appliances, flooring, cabinetry, etc. from building sites to Habitat for Humanity. The organization is then able to repurpose this material for future use, enabling Habitat to build more homes for deserving Houston families. Additionally, my team recently designed and built a special playhouse valued at $20,000 for the Ronald McDonald House of Houston. This unique playhouse was designed with every child in mind, as all entrances are wheelchair accessible.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
One thing I would do differently, if I had to relaunch On Point Custom Homes, would be to think about what a vertically-integrated organization would look like and frame that structure from day one. At On Point, we keep everything in-house as much as possible, including architecture, interior design, project and construction management, sales, marketing, etc. These positions have developed over the years as I have realized how to properly scale for this vertical integration. Figuring out how I could structure this better from the start, rather than learning and adding positions and services as I went, would have allowed me to operate more efficiently from the very beginning.
