Meet John Ly of Houston

Today we’d like to introduce you to John Ly.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started roughly 3 and 1/2 years ago with LGI Homes as a New Home Sales Consultant. I did not have any background in real estate at all prior to joining LGI Homes. I previously worked at Mattress Firm for 11 years straight out of college when I graduated from UH. I had various roles as National Sales Specialist in the Events and Expositions team, to Senior Sleep Experts and to Store Manager roles. One of my friends during my time at Mattress Firm had great success with LGI Homes and recommended me to give it a shot and take the leap of faith to apply and join the company. There was one day an opening role for a New Home Sales Consultant in December 2022 for LGI Homes and Lago Mar, and I decided to apply and take advantage of the opportunity. I officially started with LGI Homes in February 2023 and taken through a world class training program. Since I had no background in sales with real estate, LGI Homes provided the vehicle and resources to train and develop me throughout my sales career with them. Little did I know, in 2023, the real estate market was experiencing peak national interest rates in the mid 7% to 8%. That meant that in my first year with LGI Homes, I was entering into a market that meant affordability for homes was going to start at a much higher monthly payment for our customers, yet despite that, we were still having success in my community. In 2023, since I was still “in the fog” where I did not know much about real estate, I had to take the time to develop and understand the business and construction of our houses. Going into 2024, that was going to be my first full year into LGI Homes and I was becoming better with a 25% increase year over year in my business. In 2025, I finally have gotten the opportunity and learning curve I needed and ended up closing over 18.5 homes, with over $7,000,000 in volume to upgrade my job title as Sales Professional with LGI Homes. I was invited out to our Circle Of Excellence Trip in Maui for my accomplishments. Fast forward to today, we are half way done for the year for 2026, and I am currently #1 in Houston for LGI Homes and #22 Nationwide for my company.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It was most definitely challenges along the way. Anytime when you enter into a new field of work, you have to take the time to understand and learn the business. We are not order takers when it comes into new home sales. We have to understand what makes a deal work for mortgaging, and what we can do to help those that don’t qualify. We have to understand construction of our own products to build value on how we would excel from other builders. We can’t control what the interest rates will be to offer affordability with our clients.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
As a Sales Professional with LGI Homes, I tend to run into alot of 1st time homebuyers. In my line of work, I will help guide them throughout the sales process to educate them on how they can accomplish their dream of homeownership. What sets me apart from many people is the work ethic I am willing to do to help my clients out. If I have a client that comes in with a 400 credit score, we don’t turn them away. We help guide them on what they can do to help accomplish their goals. One of my proudest moments was helping a Veteran that was in the 400 credit scores and we worked hard for 2 years to help her accomplish her dreams and purchasing a house with us. I also know that I cannot rely just on leads that come in with LGI Homes, so what sets me apart from my peers is creating a network with realtors through social media on Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
I believe word of mouth through experiences and recommendations would help the most. Even though I know that maybe everyone may not want to move to my community in Lago Mar, they may know someone that may. Referrals would help with my business. The strongest collaborations typically will come from Realtors. Reason being, is typically realtors can pool from a large network of clients to help bring qualified buyers to you. With our easy sales process, realtors love dealing with LGI Homes because they know they can just register their clients, send us their referrals, and we help close them and get them paid.
