Today we’d like to introduce you to Johnathon Espinoza.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Johnathon. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I began competing in art shows at an early age which helped me gain confidence in everyday life and shaped a new outlook for what I could achieve as an artist. After high school graduation, I picked up painting as a new medium. This rekindled my passion for art and became somewhat obsessive. I was still in a competitive mindset and chose to aim my energy at new personal challenges as well as what I perceived as the status quo. I felt that if I wasn’t able to go to college then, I would work just as hard as a student. Except the real world was my teacher and I had to brace myself for the harsh realities. To me, it was just another critic and I disregarded what I wanted and accepted what I felt was constructive criticism, just as I’ve done my entire life.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Some struggles I dealt with was typical for most that grew up around me. I didn’t want to become a statistic. I chose to pursue what I felt would be monumental to my family and community. I knew that the role of art was vital to the functionality of life. Though I wasn’t equipped with the wisdom and tools that I would have over time achieved. I was willing to prove this to myself and often thought of people I might let down if I didn’t give my best as I’ve already achieved so much throughout my career.
Universal Artist Johnathon Michael – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I specialize in hand drawn/painted paintings and illustrations not limited to paper or canvas. I also create/design custom fabrics in which become collaborations for local designers. I’m most proud of being able to be trusted to express my creative freedom and direction input for major projects such as high fashion couture runway shows. I believe what sets me apart is my distinct style, indicate detail, diverse skillets, and uncanny originality.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Personally, success is being able to dig into the depths of myself and have it apply to this world in a relative way. Art overall is communication at its core as should be the driving gears for my thought process. Major markers for me are being able to stay versatile and open minded to projects that will allow me to grow; most have come in the spirit of collaborations. I strive to pioneer or bridge gaps for all artists to be fluent in diverse industries.
