Today we’d like to introduce you to J O M i.
J O M i, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’m a Houston, Texas native with what I would consider abnormal skill sets, my instruments of profession are playing all percussion instruments and also the Trombone, a bit unusual! Playing drums as a child, I had no problem beating on things growing up. From church to outside gigs, I developed a journey of being a professional drummer and overall musician early on in life even through grade schooling. In the year of 2008, I began playing Trombone, quickly developing skills, and gaining opportunities to play in higher-level ensembles at a very young age. I gained a love for Marching Bands and HBCUs growing up in my household, my father and mother both graduated from Texas Southern University gaining 2 Master’s Degrees, and my brother marched in “The Human Jukebox” marching band and graduated from Southern University, also obtaining a Masters degree from Lamar University. Influenced by my parents, I attended Texas Southern University as well where I truly gained a love for the Trombone and was also discovered by the world-renowned artist Solange Knowles, with whom I still work from time, love her so much! I just really gained a strong passion for the art and craft of music and the entertainment industry. I realized talent and skill are not just given to anyone as I thank God every day for the opportunity to display mine. I am now currently working with a collective of artists, pursuing artist development in studio etiquette as well as performing, while managing and still performing live and producing records. My single “That New” will drop on June 17th, this can be updated to June 20th as the single released on 06/20. I am expanding my career in music, fashion, and many more skill sets as I continue to develop into the individual God has placed me here to be.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Music and entrepreneurship are not easy combinations. Covid affected a lot of us who were in the entertainment industry, especially those who were on tour during the pandemic. From finance to the inability to travel for work, and mask mandates, it was a difficult time for all of us but especially musicians and entertainers. It almost felt as if we didn’t exist!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My directed role at the moment would be considered artist development. When I connect with artists and have conversations with them, it’s important that they are able to communicate and understand studio knowledge while present as well as recording. I help artists with this process as some duties are, vocal production, informing proper terminology, artist and engineer etiquette, and recording etiquette. I’ve gained ample amount of skill sets over time from touring and being around professionals that you probably wouldn’t be able to get out of a “how to operate in the music and entertainment industry” book. I tend to live by the motto of “you don’t want to be counted out of anything if you don’t have to be.” So I strive to make that a true statement daily, with prayer and knowing that someone is in need of something I was blessed to be able to offer, with no hesitation. I am very proud of that, I am also very proud of the recent Emmy nomination along with my fellow bandmates for the best commercial of 2021 scored by Solange Knowles for Beats By Dre entitled “Do you Love Me?”. Definitely a big deal coming from where I come from!
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
“You must always be prepared for a rainy day.” Something my father would say all the time, the pandemic definitely showed how true that statement really was. You never know what can happen in this day and age, we MUST be prepared for a “rainy day”.
