Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonathan Kaplow.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jonathan. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My education includes a bachelor degree in business and an MBA in finance and accounting, I am a CPA certified in Texas. I worked in industry for nine years before I purchased a small CPA firm in 1993. The CPA firm that I purchased specialized in providing accounting services to small and medium-sized businesses in the greater Houston area. Like any CPA firm, we also prepared business and individual tax returns for our accounting clients and others. My plan at the time was to rapidly expand our accounting business. However, in the mid nineteen-nineties, QuickBooks software became popular. As a result, many of our accounting clients began preparing their own financial statements and no longer needed our accounting services. I adopted the philosophy “that if you can’t beat them, join them,” and I became a certified QuickBooks ProAdvisor. I changed my business plan from preparing financial statements for our clients to helping our clients prepare their own financial statements using QuickBooks software. I focused on expanding our higher-margin consulting and tax preparation business. Fast forward 23 years and we are now a mid-sized CPA firm with five employees. Our primary focus is tax preparation including individuals and businesses that use QuickBooks software. We also do QuickBooks and general consulting, audits of financial statements and we still have a few accounting clients left from our early days.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We have faced the same challenges that many CPA firms face: changes in technology, a shortage of qualified accounting staff, and work compression due to the tax deadlines.
Jonathan W. Kaplow, Certified Public Accountant – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We specialize in tax preparation for businesses that use QuickBooks software. We are experts with this software, and we know how to get the information out of the system to prepare accurate tax returns. We also help our clients with the operation of their QuickBooks accounting system. We are also very experienced in business and individual tax preparation and all of our CPA’s have over 25 years’ experience. We are focused on what is in the best interest of our clients. Our clients trust and depend on us and we work very hard to maintain that trust.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I derive satisfaction knowing that we have been successfully helping clients for over twenty-three years. We have shown consistent growth during that time. I do not know that there is any one moment that I am most proud of, other than our overall achievements over the years.
