Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Dubra
Hi Jordan, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I first stared my journey with nails in 2015. My sister and I would always go to the nail salon to get our nails done. EVERY TWO WEEKS!! As a kid in elementary school, that can get a bit expensive for my parents, so we both decided we would try it out for ourselves. We ordered just a few products and began teaching ourselves. My sister very quickly lost patience for it, while I decided to stick it out. A year goes by and I’m finally getting my nails to last longer than just a couple days, but they still aren’t exactly where I want them to be. I continue at it and slowly transition from hard gel into acrylic nails. This was a bit of a jump scare for me because now it would be a bit harder for me to manipulate the product, unlike the hard gel. With practice it didn’t take me too long to get the hang of it. By this time I was in high school (2016) and my classmates were beginning to notice my nails and were wanting me to do theirs. I was super nervous because I was still fairly new to doing nails, especially on other people. Luckily I had a good amount of friends that were willing to be my models for me. I started doing their nails, but unfortunately they were only lasting a week at most. Any chance I got I would do my nails to figure out the problem. So I continued to do nails throughout high school up until I graduated. I remember my mom and dad sat me down to see what it was I wanted to do when I graduated high school. I specifically remember my dad telling me “you should just go to cosmetology school. you’ve already been doing nails all this time”. I had a decision to make because I was battling between going to cosmetology school and nursing school. I ended up doing one semester at nursing school before I realized my true passion was doing nails. So around this time (2020) COVID-19 hit. The time that we spent in quarantine I reconnected with doing nails and put all of my time back into practicing the craft. Not too long after that I applied to cosmetology school, completed my 3 months and graduated with my manicurist license. I started working at a salon my dad owned and it felt so surreal to actually be in my own space doing what I loved. Here I am almost 5 years later in a new city still having the time of my life doing what I love…nails.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
One of the main challenges with being a service provider in this industry is finding your place and finding people that will support your craft. Building a clientele from the bottom up can either make or break your career. Fortunately I had a great support system of friends and family that wanted to see me succeed. It didn’t take me long to get my footing and get clients that trusted me to do their nails.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Im a nail artist, and I specialize in nail enhancements, specifically acrylic and gelx nails. Im mainly known for my acrylic nails since that’s what I’ve been doing for the longest amount of time. I have to say the thing Im most proud of is moving out to Dallas and completely building my clientele back up from nothing. It has to be the most nerve wracking thing for an entrepreneur.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I wouldn’t say luck has played any part in my life. Anything that I have now I’ve worked really hard to get.
