Thanks for sharing your story with us Jordin. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
When I was a little girl, I grew up watching my Grandma Rita bake butter pound cakes for our family. These pound cakes brought laughs and great memories to the family table. I was always so fond of how food brought my family together. Around the age of 8, my Great Grandma Gleghorn came to visit from Springfield, Illinois for Thanksgiving.
Together we made lemon meringue and sweet potato pies from scratch. That was the icing on the cake. Before my Grandma Gleghorn left to go back home she surprised me with a rolling pin. From then on, I was hooked. As the years went by, I was baking all the time. Every holiday turned into every gathering and every gathering turned into every family/friend event. Word got around and I was soon inspired to sell my creations. I now provide my creations to weddings, baby showers, bridal showers, birthdays, and gender reveals.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
At such a young age, I wanted to start my business so the struggles of school came up and balancing my decisions. I then lost my best friend, Aunt Cynthia who was one of my biggest cheerleaders. I actually stopped baking and being productive with myself for a while. My mom decided to get me out of my rut and had me consider applying for the SURE Program at the University of Houston Bauer College of Business. The SURE Program is a program that helps entrepreneurs start their business and goes into detail with what you need to do to achieve your business goals. The SURE program helped mold my business into what it is today. With that being said It has not been a smooth road its actually still pretty rocky. There is so much more in store for Blush and so many things I want to do.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about BlushCakes – what should we know?
BlushCakes creates custom cakes and unique treats. Blush specializes in everything buttercream. We are known for our popular letter and number of cakes which have fun candy, fruit, and flowers on top that work with any themed event. I’m proud that my offerings bring life long memories for my customers. It’s always something to talk about when they experience my creations. They are not only beautiful but they melt in your mouth.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I take full pride in my work. I have learned that my patience with my creations is the most important. If I don’t take my time, it won’t come outright and I will start all over. My parents are my witness, I will literally throw a whole cake away if I’m not satisfied of the turnout.
