Meet Joseph Bui

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joseph Bui. They and their team shared their story with us below:

Joseph Bui is a Vietnamese-American editorial, documentary, and portrait photographer. Joseph graduated from Colby College, where he received his bachelor’s degree in Studio Art with a concentration in photography. Upon graduation, he worked for the Houston Chronicle, Houston Landing, Texas Tribune, and Wall Street Journal as an independent photographer.

He has a passion for storytelling on topics of relationships between people, community, identity, culture, and the theme of “home.” This has led him to tell the stories of the Queer Community in Waterville, Maine, and most recently his own family in Houston, Texas through his photo book and series, “I Love You. I Miss You. Have A Good Day.”

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. I’ve always struggled with the feeling of not being good enough as a photographer. It’s the feeling of anxiety about failing and trying to make ends meet.

There will be days when I feel great about my work and others, but I feel unsatisfied. However, overall, pursuing art is worthwhile. I make art for myself to express what matters to me.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a Houston-based editorial, documentary, and portrait photographer.

In my work, I create compelling photographs that elevate the voices of my subjects and their stories. I have an interest in storytelling about people, community, and the theme of “home.”

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk-taking.
I see risk as an opportunity to obtain something greater with the possibility of losing something if it doesn’t work out.

I don’t see myself as a risk-taker as much, but there are moments when I will take a chance at an opportunity to be something greater.
