Today we’d like to introduce you to Joseph Nance.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Well, my story as an artist began when I was about ten years of age. I considered myself an illustrator. As an illustrator, my favorite thing to draw was people in all kinds of situations because of all the comics and graphic novels that seized my attention at that age. I collected them almost solely on graphic content, but I liked most of the stories too (Lol). I remained interested in illustration throughout college and even up until now, but then I discovered what the art in photography was truly about. I discovered it was the same concept as any other form of visual artistic expression but with different tools. Visual art is about what the human eye perceives and what the human eye perceives is light. Although I still do my illustrations from time to time, my passion is my photography. It is my chosen path for creating a world full beauty, expression, and diversity.
Please tell us about your art.
My work is all about creating beautiful images of everyday people that allows them to either promote or change their perception of themselves. I accomplish this through the portraits that I create in my photography studio. It is about crafting light to allow me to bring out the emotion of an individual that is true to the unique personality of that individual. I chose portrait photography for two reasons. One, there is nothing in the world more interesting than people. People are so extremely multi-dimensional that I could literally take a portrait every day for a year and not run into the exact same personality. Two, the ability to uplift and empower someone who has never had the ability to see themselves at their best. Perception is everything, and if you can change a person’s perception of themselves, it will change their whole life forever. I am a witness to the power of it. As with most stories, my story is also one with pain and lessons to be learned. I grew up in a household where there was a lot of extreme emotional instability. I grew up with an immense lack of self-worth, low, and even lower self-esteem. I carried that with me throughout most of my life until I met an amazing woman who helped me to realize my own self-worth and the value in my artistry. She helped me to see how I could change peoples lives with the power of positive self-image through my portraiture. Although my photography studio covers a number of portraiture specifics like glamour, physique, seniors and fine art, all of it is designed to help my client achieve, promote and sustain the most favorable perception of herself. I provide an all-around experience with a hair and makeup artist in studio and wardrobe recommendations to make sure we achieve the right look for her to truly show her the uniqueness and magnificence of the constantly evolving work of art that she is. My favorite quote about that is, “It’s one thing to make a picture of what a person looks like, it’s another thing to make a portrait of who they are.” -Paul Caponigro
As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
As an artist, I define success as being able to consistently create awe-inspiring images and experiences for my clients by providing impeccable service that is fueled by my passion. The main quality I feel is essential to success as an artist is knowing your value. Once you have defined your value you know how to better position yourself for success, don’t let others approval or disapproval of you determine your value. You have to do it.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
Most of my work is client specific, so I don’t post everything I create, but when I do post, it’s usually on my website jnancephoto.com on my Instagram @jnancephoto or my facebook at facebook.com/jnancephoto.
