Today we’d like to introduce you to Joseph Young.
Hi Joseph, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’ve had musicians in my family for years so freestyling and instruments were one of those things I had to get good at to be better at my rival sibling, cousins, and associates. I come from the 249 area, northwest to Acres homes, where my pop’s family rose and still grow, I eventually moved out to an outskirts of suburbia my middle school year and saw a complete change of scenery that helped give me a creative perspective not many can say that witness, and if they do, it’s a good vibe….my music expresses all this as I dip into different genres simply expressing stories based off what I been through and made.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My mom and pop always made sure I was fed, clothed, and educated so I can’t complain, we lived in inner city Houston so random disasters, crazy people, crooked cops always were around somehow and in some way every struggle I been through helped make me so I’d call it lessons of life more than struggles of life.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a rapper/musician and a barber at “Forever young Barbershop” on the northwest side of Houston, when I’m not in the shop cutting hair, I’m in the studio mixing some vocals or editing some videos, I’m not the best at it yet but my ambition is solid for my passion which will get my far, I don’t compare myself to others, I feel like forms of expressions are too broad to try to box in next to someone else’s, I’m proud to understand that I can make my feelings/experiences turn into music, I’ve opened up for many big names such as, Honey Komb Brazy, Queen, Ken the man, J-Dawg, OTB Fastlane, Boosie, EST GEE. Etc. I’ve done SXSW performances in Austin, and performed all over Houston since the age of 16, I am 22 now.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Risk it for the biscuit. You miss all the shots you don’t take in life.
