Today we’d like to introduce you to Josh Sheiman and Kevin Cowart.
Groove Adhesive started when Kevin Cowart approached Josh Sheiman about doing an original project. Josh and Kevin knew each other briefly while attending the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami while studying under the legendary Whit Sidener. Both Kevin and Josh were already regular performers in the Houston music scene and shared a passion for original music. When looking for other members to join the band, Kevin reached out to Jelando Johnson who played bass with him in the group Bleu Orleans and Josh reached out to drummer Jordan Almes who played on his debut album “21st Century.”
The group began to rehearse around May of 2019 and quickly worked up a full hour-set of original material. The material emphasized a jazz approach to many popular styles of music including funk, R&B, blues, Latin, and more. While originally setting out to do a jazz/fusion group, Groove Adhesive has recently rebranded themselves as “Houston Fusion” to represent both the diverse makeup of the band as well as music that transcends any one genre.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The band gelled together very easily and musically everything seemed to click right away. Being able to perform an entire set of original material so quickly is not typical of most bands. However, all four of the core musicians in Groove Adhesive have experienced the struggles of Houston not always being the most supportive city of original music. Despite so many great musicians, it is often hard to find venues who support live original music in Houston and it also remains difficult to draw people to the venues. Groove Adhesive has been lucky to perform regularly at Preamble Lounge and Craft House as well as Notsuoh and continue to search for new venues across the greater Houston area. Groove Adhesive is hoping to not only build their brand but also draw more attention to the original music scene in Houston.

Based out of one of the most diverse cities in America, Groove Adhesive is Houston’s premier fusion group. Comprised of some of Houston’s finest talent, members of Groove Adhesive come from an eclectic mix of musical backgrounds. Collectively, they are able to use their strong foundations in jazz and improv with the love of funky grooves to seamlessly stick a diverse range of genres together including funk, r&b, Latin, soul, blues, and more! They pride themselves on original compositions that will immediately grasp the listener’s attention. Groove Adhesive shows are like no other. They’re not intended for one specific kind of listener and cannot be put into one specific genre. Their shows have already been creating a large buzz locally and the group is looking forward to showcasing their funky Houston blend on the national level!
