Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua Andrews.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Well like the late great rapper Biggie said, “It was all a dream”. It was thoughts, it was ideas that captivated me at a very young age. As a kid I use to beat box all the time and nod my head. I then started making beats with whatever was in my hand, rather pen, pencil or marker. In grade school I thrived in English class, countless teachers enjoyed reading my essays as I loved to write creatively. I also signed up for band, and played different instruments, majority drums. Just hitting the drum was very expressive to me. I also wowed my band director and band members by uncontrollably freestyling on the drums and earning Section Leader. As I started to fiddle more and more with percussion, I also started to rap. I was very hard on myself and always told myself “you can’t rap, no one would listen to that”. But one day I freestyled a song and after that I knew I had to be a rapper because it was so crazy to me how I came up with the rhymes in seconds and not even thinking but make total sense. It sent chills down my spine. I felt alive, and I never looked back. That’s pretty much my start up story. I am where I am today because of endurance and persistence. I started to take online courses for music production as I wanted to learn the full craft of music making so I can depend on myself and not others to make my music sound the way I want it to sound.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not a smooth road. There’s a learning curve in everything you do. It was hard for me to take my ideas and turn them into full songs. My first-year beats were horrible. I listened to them now and laugh like what was I thinking (laughs). But you progress with every song. Constantly freestyling and writing to myself or rapping with friends over the years has given me good routines, habits, and confidence. I also rapped in church and performed a lot of different places such as malls, conferences, and other churches. Those experiences have erased all stage jitter. The choir director use to challenge me all the time when I rapped in rehearsals. I was challenged to write quickly about different topics. It was times where we had 10 minutes to make a new song, and have it perfected in a few hours for a next day performance. Those type of situations you really see what you’re made of and what you’re capable of. I no longer struggle with writing or making songs, of course there’s that artist writer’s block from time to time, but I have the knowledge and expertise to overcome those situations. When I’m in the studio I am still reminded of previous lessons through life, and I proceed to give it my all with each passing song.
