Meet Joshua Jeffords of Paradise Palapas in South Houston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua Jeffords.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
We started almost 5 years ago. I started this company in my back yard and through the years we have worked our way, through putting our customers and quality first, to our 2-acre showroom on I-45 in Lamarque. We take pride in our work and believe in old fashion customer service. I believe in giving more than we take and serving God first, then others and finally ourselves. If we continue to follow this in that order we will always have an abundant business. I know if we help enough other people get what they want first in return we will get what we want too.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I don’t believe any business always has smooth roads. We have definitely had our struggles. We import our thatch from Mexico and that has given us huge problems over the years where we lost tens of thousands of dollars for supplies we never received. We use natural material straight from the woods which can be difficult to get sometimes when we get a lot of rain. We had a property sold out from under us and had to relocate unexpectedly but through the grace of God we landed here on I-45. I knew we would deal with problems like this as business isn’t easy or everyone would do it and be successful at it. We don’t quit and won’t go away. We look forward to continuing to grow each year.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
We have a of team of the best outdoor service providers in the Houston area. We do much more than Palapas. We are creators of private escapes, good vibes, relaxation retreats, Pura Vida lifestyles, Zen and serenity gardens, tranquility settings and relaxing environments. We accomplish this by offering all outdoor services including landscaping, pools, waterfalls, Palapas, pergolas, pavilions, gazebos, irrigation, outdoor lighting, concrete, pavers, decks, outdoor kitchens and bathrooms, fencing and much more. Now we are best known for our Palapas due to the fact that we continue to innovate to build the very best Palapas available. The thing I am most proud of is the blessings we can pass on to our communities and others in need of help. The more successful we are the more we give back and that motivates me to press harder every day. What separates us from the others is our genuine care to provide our customers with the very best options available and the unwillingness to cut corners and provide something below our abilities.

What were you like growing up?
I am one of 8 kids. We moved a lot when I was a child. I started in business when I was 6. I had a lemonade stand in front of my house. By 8 years old, I was selling candy and cards at school to my classmates. My mother would take me to Sam’s Club to buy candy in bulk. I would sell all that and double my money. I was hooked. I loved sales. People looked forward to seeing me because I was the candy man. I loved the attention and the ability to multiply money. By the time I was 11 I loved the outdoors and never enjoyed video games like a lot of my friends and family. So having a passion for the outdoors and sales I started selling myself to neighbors and family. I started doing lawn maintenance. I remember I was the only 14-year-old at school that had a Prime Co. phone and I paid the bill with my own money. I remember when I was that age I would see my mother give my older and younger siblings money and when I asked for some she would say ” You know how to make money Joshua, go rake some leaves and earn your own money son.” For years I resented this but looking back I realized this has helped me get to where I am today. I know the future can be anything. How big can you dream?
