Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua Wilson.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I moved to Houston in the third grade, I always had trouble paying attention in school because I was always more interested in playing. I still have trouble working places that don’t allow a little fun to be had. Growing up in my house I used to stare at the artwork my mom had displayed and wonder how it was created. Seeing the name Ansel Adams underneath a picture of a landscape made me wonder who this person was. How did they create this image? I started shooting on disposable cameras for our field trips or for family outings but never graduated to anything better. Cell phone cameras began to improve and I was able to start shooting with them more and more. I didn’t take a photography class in school and just the beginning of this year purchased my first DSLR. Everything I know I have learned from YouTube, trial, and lots of error, but with persistence and help from my peers I have kept improving and finding new skills to learn. I recently started modeling because my camera went down and I didn’t have anything to do. I have really enjoyed being able to express myself and meet new people in my city. I have been having a rough few years and the amount of support in this community is unmatched. Truly a blessing to have met the people I have met. The last way that I create art is with my hands repairing homes. I run my own remodeling business and I have been working for myself for almost two years. I am hoping that my company will take off in 2019 as well as my modeling, photography and music. Oh yea, I am an aspiring musician too. Keep an eye out for some youtube videos of cover songs soon.
Please tell us about your art.
I mainly shoot portrait photography but I am transitioning into wedding photography and boudoir. I also model, play music, and repair houses. I like to capture special moments like weddings and I like to empower women with boudoir by showing them they can be as beautiful as any other model. Weddings give you the opportunity to shoot video, stills, and a chance to market boudoir to brides as wedding gifts to their husbands. That is why I am making the jump, I hope to own my own wedding photography business by the end of next year. Until then I am shooting with Gina Schild learning everything she will teach me. I enjoy capturing people’s moments so they can look back and remissness on that day forever. I am inspired by life and the beauty you can find anywhere, it is all about perspective. I hope that people can feel my emotions as much as the emotions of the subject, that may be asking a lot but hopefully viewers can feel both.
What do you think about conditions for artists today? Has life become easier or harder for artists in recent years? What can cities like ours do to encourage and help art and artists thrive?
There are plenty of artists in Houston, and I think that there is mad support for local art right now. I think that it has become easier for you to be seen but on the same hand it has made it easier for you to slip back. You have to stay relevant and keep posting your work, networking is a big part of this industry. I think that the city is doing a good job letting art be displayed around the city on walls and other objects. There are plenty of places around town that you can see wall art like the graffiti walls off Leeland St. There are plenty of pop up venues that allow artists to set up and vend with little to no cost.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
You can view my photography online, my most recent work is posted to instagram and I will be in the #14 Issue of Gei Ink Magazine under my modeling page. You can support my work by hiring me to photograph your family events, business events, weddings, engagements, boudoir, gender reveal, or whatever you need help capturing. If you need a professional and dependable male model I am your man. I can be there short notice and I can act the part needed. Last but not least if you have any issues or upgrades needed to your home please give me the chance to solve your problem.
