Meet Jova

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jova.

Jova, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Music has always been a part of my life that’s been constant, so making the change to focus on it was never a hard decision for me. When I was ten (or maybe 11) my parents moved us from Puerto Rico to Houston for “new beginnings”. He wanted to open a church here, it was different. We knew the language but not as well, the environment was different to what we were used to, and struggling with the changes became a bit difficult to find friends. I started writing my own songs in 6th grade. I was sitting outside in the commons area of school, Hildebrandt Intermediate, when I decided that all of this uncertainty, all of the doubt, the fear, needed to be written down. I never really stopped after that. Now, I make music as an extension of who I am and what I’m feeling. Right now I’m married and a father of two and I feel like I wouldn’t be here had my father decided not to move us here. I love Houston, it’s the city that watched me grow.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Of course, I was laughed at A LOT by friends and family. Told I would never make it by people that said the supported me. The worst part about becoming an artist is the fact that at first nobody is going to believe you, nobody is going to support you, they don’t have to. Believe in yourself and the people will come.

We’d love to hear more about your music.
I try to stay in touch with all aspects of the music creating business. I like to be in control of what kind of music I make. I’m a big believer of quality over quantity and I’d like to think it shows in what I put out. I mostly make Reggaeton/Trap music, and most of it is in Spanish, but I do sing/record an English song here or there.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I want to go on tour, meet new people but more importantly I want to help people. I want to help our community.
