Today we’d like to introduce you to Joy McCormack.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Joy. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My husband and I decided many years ago to focus on two main organizations to dedicate our time and talent to. Although we would reciprocate, our chosen were the YMCA of Greater Houston and the National MS Society. Along the way, I’ve become active in my children’s schools as well. I always say I’m just a volunteer. What I do can depend on the need of the organization. I’ve done everything from Chair the Trotter Family Y Board to ride the MS 150 18 times. I love the variety in chairing a luncheon to assisting in fundraising at school.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In volunteering, there is never a straight road but rather a curvy path full of excitement and opportunity. I have experienced that in forming the Celebrating Women of the Y luncheon to benefit the Trotter Family Y and through a collaboration with the NMSS to create the Moving Stronger program at the Y. Helping build a SPARK park at Valley Oaks Elementary was one of my favorite projects. Serving as a City of Spring Valley Councilmember has been a new and challenging time but very rewarding. I truly only want to serve my residents. Volunteering with my daughter through NCL Memorial has been amazing. Watching your children grow and learn to serve is what it’s all about.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I think watching the operation at the Trini Mendenhall shelter was the most rewarding. Seeing all the organizations collaborate and people from all walks of life come together to take care of their neighbor during Harvey was heartwarming. Although an exhausting three days, it was like a major project that required on-site planning and execution to care for our guests. I never want another Harvey experience for our great town, but I love the relationships that were fostered in that time.
