Today we’d like to introduce you to Juan Quintero.
Juan, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My story began as I was looking for a way to turn my dreams into reality.
I was born in Colombia in a region known for the production of coffee worldwide, where I grew up surrounded by aromas and flavors that highlight the quality of Colombian coffee.
As part of the culture of the region, I learned the different processes from the production in the farms where everything begins with a seed and ends in the production of the coffee bean.
I had the opportunity to attend The University of Caldas, where I obtained the title of agricultural engineer and years later, specialized in agricultural management, with the aim of improving every process related to agriculture.
Between dreams and goals, my first company was born in Colombia, where between flowers and coffee, I learned about different processes, and from Colombia, I began to open a market in the United States.
A few years later, the circumstances of my life brought me to live in Houston, Texas.
Since not everything in life is easy, nor is anything perfect, you will always find obstacles and limitations.
I had to take a break in my life and leave dreams and goals for a moment to look for other alternatives while breathing and thinking on how I was going to reinvent myself and start my life again.
After four years, my dreams are not gone and the desire to continue working to achieve my goals is still alive.
With the help of two foundations, I was able to obtain a line of credit to start again and create Hortiprocess, a coffee roasting company. “Specializing in Colombian origins.”
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The path has not been easy, but perhaps the experience helped me find a way to solve the obstacles that I have found.
The first big obstacle was in the process of buying the machines, which were manufactured and imported from China.
Two very delicate things happened in this process.
The first was the increase in tariffs on products from China, which affected me on 25% of the original cost.
The second and most delicate problem.
I was the victim of an electronic theft in the second payment transaction, which was equivalent to 50% of the cost of the machinery.
With these two problems on top, the installation costs had already been exceeded and the viability of the project seemed null and everything seemed to indicate that it had to be closed before starting.
Finally, it was not the first time that I had to face such a situation, and so the decision was to go ahead and give everything of myself to get out of this stage.
The second thing has been my limitation that I have with the handling of the English language, in which I keep working every day to improve.
