Today we’d like to introduce you to Juan Treviño.
Juan Treviño is recognized within the Regional Mexican/Tejano genre as a songwriter and music producer. His compositions have been recorded by outstanding groups and winners of GRAMMYs and Latin GRAMMYs such as La Mafia, Grupo Sólido, Grupo Siggno, Los Palominos, Jimmy Gonzalez and Grupo Mazz, Elida Reyna and Avante, David Lee Garza y Los Musicales, among others.
Likewise, Juan Treviño has numerous certificates of participation as a composer in nominated productions and winners in the GRAMMYs and Latin GRAMMYs.
I’ve been playing music since I was seven, my dad gave me a guitar for Christmas. I learned and started playing and singing in church in Agualeguas Nuevo León Mexico.
Around the age of 10-12 years old, my brothers and I started a small family band where we played at private events. I also started playing the saxophone for the Edison Middle School marching band and my middle school also had a mariachi band where I played the guitarrón and sang. Later, I joined TBH, “Talento Bilingue De Houston.” I was fortunate enough to tour for the first time doing a college tour that started in Arkansas and ended in New York.
When I got into to high school, I continued playing in the marching band and I also started playing bass guitar for a couple of local Tejano bands.
Well, in 1998, I started a band called Essencia with my brother and cousin. That’s when I started writing. Being that we were a new band, it was hard for us to get songs from more established songwriters. So, I started writing and arranging music for the band. We got to tour in Mexico and some states in the U.S with some of the top bands in our genre. As I got to know a lot of these bands, I felt more comfortable with them and I started showing them my songs. Some liked them so much as to record them.
“Essencia” recorded a total of five albums.
In 2016, I felt that I needed a change, so I decided that it was time to close that chapter and move on to focus on other projects that I had been wanting.
In 2017, I occupied a name within the Mexican/Tejano music industry, with the release of my production as a singer-songwriter entitled “Juan Treviño Fragmentos.” We could say that this is the most important project of my career, In this album I collaborated with great Texan music artists such as Armando Lichtenberger Jr. from La Mafia, David Lee Garza from Los Musicales, AJ Castillo, Rolando Benavidez from Grupo Sólido, Mario Ortiz from Jay Pérez and The Band, and Carlos Álvarez.
The first single from the album, “Siempre Es Asi” (feat. AJ Castillo) was honored with a Latin Grammy award in the Best Regional Mexican Song category in 2017.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Just like any business, you have to start from the bottom. I would record my song demos to give to the bands. A lot of time, I felt they wouldn’t give me the time of day. But that didn’t stop me, I kept writing and kept sending them out. It takes dedication and passion. I believe that you have to love what you do and have a great support system around you that can keep you motivated and focused. That’s what’s gonna keep you going through good times and the tough times.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I’m a singer/songwriter In the Regional Mexican/Tejano genre for close to 20 years now. I’m mostly known for writing songs for other great artists and bands/groups in this genre.
In 2016 and 2017, I won Tejano Song of the Year back to back at the Tejano Music Awards.
I have numerous certificates of participation as a composer in nominated productions and winners in the GRAMMYs and Latin GRAMMYs.
In 2017, I won a Latin Grammy in the category “Best Regional Mexican Song” the song “Siempre Es Así (Feat. AJ Castillo).
It was the first single off my album titled “Juan Treviño Fragmentos” which I am most proud of. This is one of the highest honors a musician can receive.
I think from playing different styles of music throughout the years, this is what helps set me apart from others. It has helped me combine different styles together to put a little twist on it. Everything I write comes from my heart, so every song has a little bit of me.
In April 2018, I released my latest single called “Quiero Que Seas Mia.” The fans have really accepted it. It’s been on the nationally syndicated radio show “Tejano Gold Countdown” for more than 20 weeks, which I am so grateful for.
Right now, I’m working on my new album. I’m almost finished and it should be out by mid-April. I’m really excited about this production, I was able to collaborate with some great artists that I admire and respect.
I think it’s some of my best work yet.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I believe that one of the qualities that is important to my success is my ability to write lyrics, it comes naturally to me to write from a more poetic aspect. Many can say that it’s not your typical bar drinking songs. I write about love mostly. But with love also comes pain. At the end of the day, I hope my songs help people fall in love or help them get over a breakup.
