Today we’d like to introduce you to Julia Shaffer.
Hi Julia, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Ever since I was in high school, I knew that I wanted to become a therapist. My curious nature, quest to better understand people, and desire to help individuals better their lives motivated me to study Psychology at the University of Southern California. During my time in college, I was surrounded by so many bright, charismatic friends who struggled and learned to cope with mental health issues. These experiences propelled me to obtain my Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from the University of St. Thomas following college. During graduate school, I fell in love with counseling. I completed internships in the counseling department of Strake Jesuit and the Monarch School, during which time I discovered my passion for working with adolescents and their families. After graduation, I received training in play therapy and worked as the School Counselor at the Regis School. Seeking experience in private practice, I joined a group practice and began working with tweens, adolescents, and young adults. Shortly thereafter, I began my own counseling practice, Julia Shaffer Counseling. I work with children, adolescents, and young adults struggling with life transitions, anxiety, perfectionism, family challenges, self-esteem and more.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
One of the biggest struggles for me was overcoming Imposter Syndrome. There were times when self-doubt got the better of me and had me questioning whether I really could start my own practice. With the perspective and support of colleagues, peers, and an excellent therapist, I learned to practice what I preach and take the leap. I haven’t looked back and I’ve never been happier!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor specializing in children, adolescents, and young adults. I’m really passionate about helping these individuals cope with anxiety, depression, dating and interpersonal relationships, burnout, perfectionism, and more. My therapy style uses elements of CBT, narrative therapy, mindfulness, and solution-focused problem-solving work. I am an active and collaborative therapist who is committed to helping clients gain more self-confidence and a stronger sense of identity.
What were you like growing up?
As a child, I was bubbly, energetic, and outgoing. I loved to walk the neighborhood with my family, make collages from magazines, and cook with my mom. I loved to read and spend time with my friends.
My twin sister and I were (and still are!) best friends. Even from an early age, my experience as a twin taught me to practice patience, develop curiosity, and show empathy for those around me.
