Today we’d like to introduce you to Julie Dodson.
Julie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was never this young girl who dreamt of being an Interior Designer, I thought I was going to be the first female to play first base for the Houston Astros either that or a sideline reporter for ESPN. lol. My mom was an Interior Designer in town and I honestly had not thought much about it. After graduating from Memorial High School, I left for Mississippi and Ole Miss.
It was my sophomore year and It was time to get serious about what I really wanted to do. I took an accounting class because that is where all the cute boys were and a design class and let’s just say accounting was not in my DNA but the design was! After graduating I moved back to Houston and I worked for a high-end design firm and then left to work for Kickerillo and gain that building knowledge. At 26 I left there and Formed Dodson and Daughter with my mom. Each of us maintaining our own individual clients.
Then about 8 or so years ago I decided it was time to leave the nest and Dodson Interiors was formed. At 32 I was named by Traditional Home magazine as one of 20 Young Designers to watch in the country and things have just kept progressing from there. I am thankful to God every day because even when I was lost and was trying to navigate where my life’s path was going to take me, He just took the wheel and said you may not know but I do! Interior Design is what he built me for and I am grateful every day that I get to wake up and do what I love.
Has it been a smooth road?
There were lots of rocky roads starting out. figuring out how to run a business, manage projects, all the while trying to enjoy life as a 20 something year old and maintain a business. That seesaw ride is one I am glad I have somewhat figured out. But I would not change a thing. I have grown so much from where I started from and I am thankful for those rocky roads. They teach you something and they make you better.

I think what sets us apart is that we capture our clients. We listen to what it is that they say. Every Person is different it is our job to listen and bring who they are into their home. We don’t just decorate we give homes a Soul!

Oh, Houston is a great city to start a business! I would tell any young person to go for it, Be prepared to work harder than you ever imagined and when things get hard and you want to throw in the towel, sleep on it because things change in an instant! Go for your dreams!
