Today we’d like to introduce you to Kailey McCollum.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Kailey. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My sister and I started our online store, www.kissuetx.com, 3 years ago. I had just recently graduated from the University of Florida and was working in NYC for some fashion designers. My sister was still in school at TCU, so we figured starting as an ecommerce boutique would be the smartest decision for us at the time. We could build our brand and customer base, and when the timing was right, we could open our brick and mortar store. We opened our first location in Memorial City Mall in 2015, and then we opened up our flagship location in Rice Village in 2016.
Has it been a smooth road?
Building a business from the ground up is not easy by any means. We started from scratch, and we have definitely faced numerous struggles and disappointments. Being a small business, you are limited to what you can merchandise you can carry in your store/how you market and advertise/etc. because of your limited budget. It is tough competing with the big name stores and brands, but we focus on creating a unique experience for our customers and giving them merchandise they can’t find at chain stores.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with KISSUE – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
KISSUE is unlike any other boutique in Houston. We definitely set ourselves apart by our atheistic and the pieces we carry. We have a unique, modern vibe and specialize in items that can’t be found in many other shops. We are most well-known for our custom label, KISSUE: The Label and our large selection of the extremely popular Quay Australia sunglasses. We recently began designing and producing our own private label ourselves, and our collections have been a hit with our customers. We buy vintage tops and re-design them with our own style. We also allow our customers to bring in their own tops and we customize them as well.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
We were born and raised in Houston, so we love this city! We love the diversity and how there is always something to do. Houston is a little behind when it comes to the fashion scene, but that’s why we are here! We’re helping bring the latest fashions to our great city.
