Meet Kara Baker

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kara Baker.

Kara, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was in college and wasn’t feeling excited about any of my classes; which lead me to make a daring choice and enroll in Cosmetology School. In school, I felt challenged and inspired and I instantly feel in love with the industry. I had found my true calling. After graduating, I was fortunate enough to be hired at a salon that encouraged continual professional growth. I met many dedicated professionals who were just as committed to their trade as I was. We supported each other and encouraged each other to be the very best. It was a wonderful learning opportunity and I soaked up all the experiences I could in those two short years! In 2018, I branched out on my own and opened my own suite! I’ve continued to invest in my talents and am currently specializing in extensions. I am currently training an assistance and look forward to ever-evolving and improving.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Has it been a smooth road? Absolutely not. I made the strategic decision to be present on social media and anytime you put yourself “out there” you open yourself up to criticism and backlash. However, I choose to focus on the positive. I get lovely encouraging messages and I choose to focus on that instead of the haters. At the end of the day, I know my clients feel happy and pretty with the product I provide and that’s what is most important to me.

Kara Baker Extensions – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My business is called Kara Baker Extensions. Right now, my super talented assistant Lorin and I focus mainly on hair color and hair extensions! Hair extensions are such a confidence boost for anyone, the smile on clients face when I turn the chair around after a new install is priceless! Nothing brings me more joy than when my clients actually want to come back and enjoy their time in the salon with us! While I plan to keep growing my extension clientele, Lorin is about to start taking on new color clients and I can’t wait to see her career take off!

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I have learned so many lessons over these past two years, more than I could have ever imagined. And as much as I feel like I should say yes, I want to go back and change things. I don’t. I’m grateful for any situation, good or bad that I have been put in. Because it has made me who I am today, no I wouldn’t go back and change anything. I can’t wait to keep learning and growing so that more people can come learn and grow with me.
