Today we’d like to introduce you to Karen Ehlers-Harwell and Brian Ehlers.
Karen and Brian, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
We come from a family that has over 120 years of combined insurance experience that include agency, claims, and corporate accounting.
We operate an independent agency with two convenient locations, one in Conroe and the other in The Woodlands. We have lived in Montgomery County since 1986. We both graduated from Montgomery High School. Karen has a degree in Business from Northwood University and Brian graduated from Sam Houston State University with a degree in Business.
We opened an independent agency after working 6 years for a family member captive agency that only had one company. We realized after 6 years that on the captive agency side you only have one rate and one set of underwriting guidelines. We were always trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. As an independent agent, we represent over 10 auto and home insurance companies and over 80 life insurance companies and work with you and your family to find the best insurance package at the most competitive price.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Owning your own agency is never a smooth road. Learning to transaction from the employee role to the employer role can have its challenges. Making the right hiring decisions and maintaining positive employee morale can be difficult.
As a young female business owner, you tend to have a few more obstacles to hurdle through in life. Two years ago I gave birth to my first child. Learning to be a mom and still run an agency was very challenging. Where most women take a maternity leave I did not. My normal day consisted of coming into the office with a newborn in tow and learning to juggle being a first-time mom and continuing to work.

Our philosophy at Karen Ehlers Insurance agency is to treat others the way you would want to be treated. It’s a very simple philosophy however it seems it gets overlooked in businesses.
