Today we’d like to introduce you to Katherine and Joseph Lundgren.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Katherine and Joseph. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
We opened our Katy office in August of 2014 with 19 clients. We were only offering Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy services. In August of 2016 we added Speech Therapy and Feeding Therapy services.
Kate and Joe Lundgren are the proud owners of Cutting Edge Pediatric Therapy (CEPT), an occupational therapy clinic which opened in Allen, Texas in June 2013. Although CEPT is a full-service clinic, it specializes in children with special needs, spectrum-related disorders and sensory integration dysfunction. Because of their personal experience and passion, their hearts are committed to helping you identify your child’s needs and achieve your child’s goals in a loving, safe and therapeutic environment.
Residing in California, Joe was offered an employment opportunity with Dal-Tile at its corporate headquarters so the Lundgren’s moved to Texas in 1997. Shortly thereafter, both of their boys were diagnosed with Autism. Trenton, who is now in his mid-twenties, has Asperger’s Syndrome and Spencer, who is now in high school, Pervasive Developmental Disorder – Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS).
Kate was an occupational therapist at the time, specializing in patients suffering from strokes and head injuries. After the boys’ diagnosis, Kate and Joe dove” head and heart” first into the field of Autism to understand what that diagnosis meant and would mean to the future of their family. Kate quickly developed an all-inclusive treatment plan for the boys; however, at that time, the options for treatment and the availability of information was limited. The boys’ past and present therapies include, but were and are not limited to: Applied Behavioral Analysis, Speech, Occupational Therapy Intensive Programs, Interactive Metronome, The Listening Program/Bone Conduction, Craniosacral/Myofacial, Oral Motor/Feeding, Fine and Gross Motor Skills training, Hippotherapy and recreational, massage, visually-based therapies, and Biomedical treatments for the boys. They continue with many of these, but have built an amazing amount of knowledge over the over the past twenty years.
The Lundgren’s believe that therapy is much more than a specific treatment modality. They believe that a unique combination of individually-designed interventions can provide the necessary “stepping stones” toward reorganizing the client’s nervous system, thus allowing for adaptation. The Lundgren’s built Cutting Edge Pediatric Therapy with the mission of “providing clients and their families with the highest quality of Occupational Therapy services, assisting clients and their families in achieving their maximum level of function.” Therefore, the motto for CEPT is “Therapy with a Purpose, It’s Imitated but not Replicated.” The Lundgren’s heart is to provide a loving, safe and therapeutic environment designed to prepare your child for a successful and abundant future.
We opened up in Katy, Houston because this therapy concept was almost non-existent in the Houston area.
Has it been a smooth road?
I should do my LOL expression as I don’t think any new business is a “smooth road”, but definitely a learning experience. In developing the concepts, many building inspectors do not know what to classify our gyms as so it is always a challenge, also bringing our type of treatment concept was a slow startup since it is unique, However, we have grown from day one where we are serving a wide range of different disabilities and truly changing the fabric of our community. We also found that there was a huge need for young adult services so we have created some excellent program for this population.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are an Occupational, Speech and Physical therapy clinic focused on treating children and young adults with a wide range of special needs. We have created a facility that is family friendly. Our treatment space and our seasoned/passionate clinicians with many years of experience are what allows us to help our clients and families accomplish their goals. We have close to 3,000 square feet of treatment space with suspended obstacle courses, slides, rock climbing wall and mountain structures. We also have some very “state of the art” equipment, some of which are listening programs and Integrative metronome. Several of our therapist are trained I’m craniosacral therapy. In addition, we work with school districts performing IEE’s to assist them in developing treatment plans
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Yes, the Houston/Katy area has a huge need for these services. I think the biggest challenge that we faced was that our model of treatment was extremely new and innovative for the Houston area. We treated for a much longer time and it was much more intensive. Our evaluation process was much more thorough and our therapists are extremely skilled. We also offered a very progressive treatment space with “state of the art equipment” including suspended obstacle courses, rock climbing walls, interactive metronome, listening programs, cranial sacral therapy etc. I think the Houston area is a great place to practice and a great place for someone new to start out.
