Meet Kathryn L. Scurry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathryn L. Scurry.

Hi Kathryn L., it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
It all started with a vision that quickly turned into okay I’m doing this. Pride Entertainment Magazine came first. My companies are Pride Entertainment, Pride Entertainment Magazine and Pride Connect each which serves a unique offering to the LGBTQ+ community.

Pride Entertainment Magazine launched September 2021 is a monthly digital publication that celebrates and commemorates LGBTQ+ community members in music, fashion, business, organizations and influential people making a positive impact with special interest in Minorities, Hispanics and Asians.

Pride Connect is the first LGBTQ+ Business, Social, Entertainment and Publication platform with built-in mental health support launching in September 2022. As a queer woman of color, I understand the importance of mental health within our community and I wanted to create a safe, diverse and inclusive platform not only for us but for supporters and allies as well. Think of it as a one stop shop platform for the LGBTQ+community.

To God be the glory is the only way to describe how I got where I am today. Hard work, motivation and consistency were key factors also. If you want something bad enough you’ll find a way to get it done.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There were challenges with starting this journey. First I had no idea how to start a digital publication. But with hours of research and the help of Canva I was able to get it done.

Second, I am a one woman show meaning I do all the creating that goes into Pride Entertainment Magazine monthly publication including building the website and monthly maintenance. But I am currently reaching out to creators to bring aboard.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I consider myself a serial entrepreneur who wears many hats. I am a former music artist, pastry chef, footwear designer, hairstylist, make-up artist and screenwriter with over 90 awards to date.

It’s very hard to buckle down to just one thing being that I am blessed with so many gifts. I am known for many things and I am most proud of the legacy I will leave behind.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
What I love about Houston is that it is spacious and not overcrowded like my hometown Brooklyn, New York. Don’t get me wrong, New York born and raised me but Texas made me the proud woman I am today. I achieved so much here from getting my degree to meeting some really great people

I honestly have nothing bad to say about the city.
