Meet Kathy Phipps of Back To Eden Fellow Program

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathy Phipps.

Kathy, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have worked with Survivors of Domestic Violence and Sexual Violence for over eight years as a Case Manager and providing prevention education to the Community on the subject. I am a Survivor of Domestic Violence form a 10-year marriage and an Adult molested as a child.

I have worked in the field providing services for victims of domestic violence and ultimately found myself in need of the same services. I was able to see both sides of the spectrum of survivorship. As I received services, I began to see major GAPS in services for survivors of DV and SV. Most services address the immediate need and counseling and not a continuum of care after the survivor is out of the relationship.

Tangible tools are not given to survivors to move on and be successful and productive within their communities and homes. Due to these GAPS and passion to be more than a Survivor, Back To Eden Fellow Program for Survivors of Domestic Violence and Sexual Violence was birth. It is a 2-year fellow program specifically for Survivors in Social justice and Economic Empowerment.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road there has been challenges and rewards. I have been able to Host several Outreach Projects at a local shelter, Fort Bend Women’s Center and initially I had an active Board. Some challenges were Board members leaving doing their tenure of service without adequate notification. Another reward is I received my IRS designation.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Back To Eden Fellow Program – what should we know?
Back To Eden Fellow Program is specifically tailored to survivors of DV or SV. There are no other programs for Survivors like Back To Eden. Most programs for Survivors address the crisis. We filled GAP and provide leadership development to Survivors after the crisis is over. We provide a pathway for the next step, ” What’s Next”?

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Because I have been both a client and worked in the field of Domestic Violence, I have a unique perspective on the dynamics of prevention and intervention in terms of providing service to a Survivor.
