Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Logan.
Kayla, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was quite artistic growing up but I never envisioned myself having a career as a makeup artist or being in any art or creative field. I was a Biology major in college with plans of becoming a dental hygienist but overtime, I found it hard to focus on my studies and questioned if I’d chosen the right field.
The one thing that kept me intrigued was makeup. I watched makeup tutorials on YouTube instead of studied for my exams or prioritized online makeup shopping over writing a lab report. I started receiving compliments on my makeup and eventually inquiries about providing services. I decided to apply for a part-time job at MAC Cosmetics, where I was hired as a permanent makeup artist. Around this time, I was no longer able to finance school and had to drop out. While at MAC, I worked with many talented makeup artists and serviced a huge and diverse group of people. It definitely equipped me with the skills I needed to become a well-rounded makeup artist and service provider.
With the demand for my services outside of the company increasing, I stepped out on faith and went into business for myself. I bounced between my home studio and on-location for a bit until I joined the team at Shear Glow Beauty Studio. Being surrounded by so many talented women inspired me to enroll in school again, but this time, to study cosmetology. With drive, determination and the support of my amazing husband and son, I’ve completed the program and will soon be a licensed cosmetologist. I look forward to expanding my services and giving my clients an even better beauty experience!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
When I decided to complete the cosmetology program, I knew my availability would be limited and I had to develop a plan to keep my business afloat. I decided to create Glaminars, which are in-depth makeup tutorials that can be watched from anywhere and at your own pace. Although this helped tremendously, it was tough balancing school, work, and family life.
Being an entrepreneur can be challenging at times, but my faith in God and the support of my family, friends and clients keep me going.
We’d love to hear more about Kay Rosh Makeup Artistry.
At Kay Rosh Makeup Artistry, I focus on naturally enhancing my client’s features and not transforming them. Customer service is also very important to me. I want my clients to have an overall great experience when they leave my chair.
Although I’m mostly known for natural glam makeup services, I also provide one-on-one lessons for beginners as well as other makeup artists. Bridal makeup is my favorite! There’s something about being a part of a bride’s wedding day that brings me great joy. I’m extremely proud to have had my work featured in Munaluchi Bride magazine and received The Knot’s ‘Best of Weddings’ award as a top wedding vendor in the Houston area.
What were you like growing up? Personality wise, interest wise, etc.
As a child, I was a bit shy and timid. You could always find me nestled under my mom. Eventually, I became more outgoing. Of my mom’s three daughters, I was deemed ‘the clumsy one,’ and by the age of ten, I’d already broken my wrist and fractured my collarbone. Music was and still is my safe haven. My sister and I would record ourselves freestyling and singing over cassette tapes in our room. I also played the trombone from the fifth-twelfth grade and a bit in college, where I joined the jazz band.
