Meet Keith Akers of Leather By Xander in Kingwood Area

Today we’d like to introduce you to Keith Akers.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Keith. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’ve always enjoyed doing creative artistic things. I decided it would be exciting to try to parlay that desire into something that would give me greater enjoyment. I have made jewelry for years. But, I wanted to find something new. I enjoy wearing leather gear. As I looked around town, I realized that there was a need for someone who does leather work in the Houston area. At the time there was just one other business that did custom leather work. So, Leather By Xander was born. I have experimented with different styles and techniques. I spoke with some of my friends to find out what they liked and, more importantly, what they needed in the way of leather gear. Things developed from there.

Has it been a smooth road?
I don’t think anything worthwhile is ever easily accomplished. My biggest struggle has been myself. When I look at my work, I tend to see only the mistakes I know are there. Little things I know I could have done better. It is a learning experience, so the more I do, the more I improve.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Leather By Xander story. Tell us more about the business.
I am a one-person operation right now. I make unique items; something personalized for the individual. I like to spend time with my clients to get to know them. I listen to their ideas to see how I can create something special just for them. I have created vests, wallets, harnesses and other apparel. I look to a lot of different areas for inspiration. I am a frequent visitor to the Texas Renaissance Festival, and I always see something there that inspires new ideas. I use many techniques I have learned making jewelry to accent the leather pieces I make. I have recently begun doing machine embroidery and am able to create patches and appliques from drawings or pictures people may have.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I certainly hope to grow my business to where I can employ others. I want to be able to help others make a living doing something they enjoy. At the moment I am strictly localized, but with the internet there really is no limit to what can be accomplished. I have several opportunities that have opened up, just within the last few days, that will be a big boost to my business.
