Today we’d like to introduce you to Keith Huckabay.
Keith, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My passion for photography goes back to when I was a child. My father had a home studio and I would sit in the studio for hours while he photographed brides, dancers, prom goers, new moms and basically anyone who wanted to have their picture taken. We would then go to the darkroom and I would watch as my “mad scientist” father would take some chemicals, mix and match and presto chango a blank piece of paper would suddenly be transformed into a moment in a person’s life.
Throughout the years, as my love for photography grew, I started to study all the images around me. And as I looked at images that other people captured, I noticed that often times, the moment was captured, however, the emotion of that moment was missing. So, my new mission was to capture an emotion in every headshot or portrait I captured. Getting that emotion is not always easy, but I like to think I can make my subject forget they are in front of a camera and in the moment.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My biggest struggle was following my passion. Often, we get trapped in a situation where you forget what your passion is and you get stuck in a job you may not enjoy.
I put photography on the back burner for many years and found myself in an industry that didn’t allow for a creative outlet.
One day, I took some pictures for a friend and that passion was ignited again and I was driven to make photography a priority again.
Keith Huckabay Photography – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Keith Huckabay Photography specializes in headshot and portrait photography. In the age of social media and digital networking, a great headshot has become a thing that everyone needs. Headshots are not just for actors anymore. People go to websites and look for staff photos and having a great and good looking headshot has become paramount.
I take pride in getting great shots of EVERYONE. I can’t count the number of times someone has stepped in front of my camera and said: “You can’t get a good picture, I am just not photogenic.” To that, I say, “Challenge accepted.”
Often times, people leave a session with their favorite photo of them they have ever taken. I have the ability to make people forget they are in front of a camera, for it’s when someone is relaxed and having a good time that we can capture who they are in one image.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
My proudest moment happens every time someone can’t believe that they look so good in an image that I captured. It never gets old. I love when I see a client look at an image of themselves and beam with pride. That makes me smile every time!
