Today we’d like to introduce you to Kellie Hurst.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My husband, Brett, and I were already doing marriage ministry at our church. We began to think about taking that work into the community. Marriage can be challenging, especially in this culture where there are so many distractions and so much pressure to achieve. We wanted to provide marriage enrichment to couples BEFORE they began to struggle. So we founded our nonprofit in 2007, and we’ve been providing marriage education ever since.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Because we are a 501c3 organization, fundraising is key. This takes more time and skill than I originally thought. Unlike other nonprofits whose work on behalf of children or the poor is easy to grasp, our work with marriages tends to be quiet, underground work.
It’s sometimes difficult to “sell” or explain the importance of marriage education.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Home Encouragement – what should we know?
Home Encouragement desires to help stabilize Houston communities by strengthening marriages. We do that by providing premarital training, date night events, marriage retreats, a global podcast, as well as mini-intensives. We serve couples who are preparing for marriage, those who are in healthy marriages, as well as those couples who are hurting. Our “niche” program is called “Dinner and a Marriage”. These are regular date night events that take place in restaurants in Katy, Westchase, The Heights, Humble, College Station, San Antonio, and others are on the way.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
We care deeply about people. Our biggest desire is to see them strive in their closest relationships.
