Meet Kelly Rosin of Heights Preschool in Houston Heights

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Rosin.

Kelly, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was looking for a mother’s day out program for my son in 2010 and was finding that it was very hard to find a place without a long waitlist. It took about eight months to get a spot and then another 4 months to get a spot at a place close to our house. I was talking with the director at my son’s school and she told me that we needed more quality childcare choices in the heights. After several months of thinking it over another mom and myself started Heights Preschool in 2011. It took us six months to find a good location. It took another year to convert the bungalow to a commercial building. So in July 2012 we opened Heights Preschool. After a year and a half my business partner and I split. We have continued to grow. We purchased the lot next door in 2016. We are navigating the City of Houston permitting process. We hope to be building and opening our new house winter 2017. We started out with 20 kids in 2012 and are looking to grow to 86 kids when the new building is complete.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
1. Finding a location that was big enough for a large play space and parking requirements of the city.
2. Permitting Process is long and tedious with the city of Houston.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Heights Preschool – what should we know?
Our business provides childcare. We have an educational day that run 9am-2pm. We also have extended hours from 7am-5:30pm M-F. We have drop in childcare from 2-5:30pm M-F that in open for the community as well. We offer parent night out from 6pm-10pm once a month in the summer and twice a month during the school year. We also do birthday parties. One thing that sets us apart from our competitors is our flexible scheduling. We offer one day-5 days a week programs.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My husband has been supportive and my listening ear along the way. My parents have encouraged me and been there along the way. Carla Washington, my assistant director I couldn’t do it without her daily support.
