Meet Kendra Hodge of Khroma Hair Studio in Pearland

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kendra Hodge.

Kendra, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Khroma Hair Studio started off being a dream of mine at the age of 9. I would always play with my Barbie doll’s hair then eventually, I began asking my mom for a mannequin head and hair supplies. A few years later, I began doing my family, close friends and church member’s hair. It brought me so much joy to see the reaction on their faces once they saw their finished look. I knew right then that being in the hair industry was definitely for me.
In 2009, I began attending Houston Community College for Cosmetology, and shortly after entering into the program I began working at Visible Changes and I loved it! I learned the importance of customer service and professionalism. At that time, I had no idea that working there would help me with my own business!

Two years later, I transitioned to an independent stylist renting a booth at a local salon in the Pearland area, and after about 3 years of building my clientele, I decided to step out on faith and open Khroma Hair Studio.
The atmosphere at Khroma Hair Studio is very warm, inviting, and positive. We strive to offer the best experience and exceed clients’ expectations with our customer service. Now, at 4 years old, Khroma Hair Studio continues to grow into the franchise business that it’s destined to be. The journey has not been easy at all. I’ve experienced many ups and downs, and there were moments when I felt that I could no longer do it but I didn’t give up. I know that Khroma Hair Studio serves a bigger purpose than just me. I truly believe that my business was created to inspire other women who are passionate about hair to achieve their goals and to keep going.
After 7 years of being a professional stylist, I gladly give back to the community and teach sessions to cosmetology students and other professionals in the industry about certain hair techniques and business. I’m so excited about the growth of the brand and looking forward to seeing what the future has in store!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No, it has not been a smooth road. When I moved to the studio I was extremely busy. Gratefully, my clientele had grown to the place where I had 4-6 clients each day and booked for weeks at a time. So, I began looking for a shampoo assistant to help maintain the flow of the day. However, finding the “perfect fit” for the studio had become a challenge. I definitely learned a lot about choosing the right people to work alongside with.
I also struggled with the ups and downs of the financial aspect of the business. Once I created a budget, it helped me become more discipline and I also became more aware of the expenses.

The biggest struggle for me now is learning how to balance it all. With the business side as far as the booking appointments, answering calls/texts, responding to emails, handling the taxes and the marketing and branding can get overwhelming, along with working in the studio 50-60 hours a week while still having a personal life and spending time with my loved ones. However, it is all worth it because I know hard work pays off in the end.

In the future, Khroma Hair Studio will be a corporate franchise studio salon located in cities all over the world. I
look forward to partnering with other like-minded individuals on growing their brand.

Personally, I am looking forward to getting married and having a family. When that time comes, I would like to service clients at my leisure and give more of my focus towards the business and marketing of the company.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had a chance to start over, I wouldn’t change a thing. I strongly believe that everything that you go through in life is for a reason. If I didn’t go through the process in the way that I did. I don’t think I would be where I am today. I take it all as a lesson learned.
