Thanks for sharing your story with us Kenisha. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
As a child from a single parent home, I watched my mom struggle to make ends meet raising 5 kids. It was painful to witness her working two minimum wage jobs while still struggling to provide a quality childhood for my siblings and I. The hardship of my upbringing is what motivated me to want a better life for myself and my family. I began working at the young age of 15. The skills I developed as a high-school student with a full-time job helped prepare me for college, which in turn prepared me to start my career early. While attending the University of Houston, I completed three internships, received a $25k scholarship that paid for my last two years of college, and launched the Fashion and Business Organization (FAB). The development of FAB inspired me to explore my entrepreneurial side and pursue a career in fashion. I have always dreamed of owning my own clothing boutique where I could connect with and help empower other like-minded women. Growing up, fashion helped me to escape my troubles, develop my identity and tell my own story. I wanted to portray myself as a successful, confident businesswoman; therefore, personal image and wardrobe became extremely important to me. I studied fashion and worked for large retailers before I decided to create a brand of my own. In August of 2018, I decided to completely bet on myself and make it all happen! I quit my full-time job to start my online women’s boutique Bundles of Chic.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I launched Bundles of Chic four months ago and it has been a tough journey. Although I have a keen eye for fashion and can build a complete wardrobe for my ideal customer, my struggles mostly have been mastering marketing and search engine optimization. Since I am the only one running the show and have very little resources, resolving those issues has been very challenging.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Bundles of Chic Boutique – what should we know?
Bundles of Chic is an online women’s boutique empowering women to bring out the best version of themselves. My mission is to make my customers feel special when wearing my brand, and offer pieces that allow them to make a statement when entering a room! I believe a Chic woman is extremely ambitious and will not let anything stop her from pursuing her goals. She is fearless, capable, strong-minded, confident, fashionable, and most importantly a go-getter! Our customers can expect versatile modern-chic pieces that can be worn to work, happy hour, special events, and more!
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Sandra Newton was my high school mentor who helped me get into college and directed me throughout my four years there. When I met Ms. Newton, I was working full time and was making failing grades in the majority of my classes. She helped me redirect my focus, pushed me to see beyond my limits, and think about my future. I looked up to Ms. Newton as she came from a similar background and made a career for herself. She came from an underprivileged family and was passionate about helping students who worked hard get into college. Being a first-generation college student, I didn’t know much about college and didn’t have any plans on attending one. She taught me the importance of furthering my education and the endless possibilities that would come from it. I owe all of my success to her and hope to impact other people lives the same way she impacted mines.
