Meet Kenny Nguyen of The Asian Gent

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kenny Nguyen.

Kenny, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I always had the idea that I wanted to do something fashion-related in my life. A lot of my friends turn to me for fashion advice, and it just made sense to do something with it. It wasn’t until I started my current job at Intermix where I met my coworker Shantae, who also runs her own blog, that I decided to move forward with it. Go check her out blog out at www.outspokenlychic.com! She saw that I had a real eye for fashion, especially after seeing my Instagram, and due to the lack of Asian male bloggers in Houston, she really urged me to start my own. It was because of her that I finally pulled the trigger and started looking into creating my blog.

I was also really inspired by my long-time friend, Shay. She and I have been friends for over 10 years, and she too runs her own successful blog under the name, “Shay Monè.” It was her unconditional support that helped guide me through creating my blog. Her husband is her photographer and shot my photos as well, and he’s been a great supporter too! Words cannot express how much I truly appreciate their support!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I would be lying if I said it has been smooth because it is anything but. My biggest struggle is consistency. Being in my full-time position as well as dealing with my own personal issues, it’s made finding the motivation and time to update my blog extremely difficult; however, I’m more present on Instagram as it is much easier to maintain.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I work full-time as a Floor Leader at Intermix, which is a high-end women’s boutique. I run my blog, The Asian Gent, on the side. However, I actually haven’t written a new post in a while because I’m looking into revamping my blog altogether. You could say I specialize in fashion in general because while my passion is men’s fashion, my job has afforded me the opportunity to look into women’s fashion and understand style and composition in ways I likely would’ve missed had my focus been primarily on menswear. I’m known for my classic, yet modern take on menswear. By that, I mean taking the tailoring aspects of men’s suiting and combining it with a more casual and playful effortlessness that still stays clean. I love suits as you’ll notice on my blog and Instagram, but I like to mix it up by playing with color, juxtaposition, and texture. I think it sets me apart because a lot of menswear pages will stick to the classic neutral or subtle color bases that, while beautifully designed, can grow a little bit stale.

What were you like growing up?
Personality-wise, I grew up quite shy, preferring to take my time to open up to people instead of being outspoken or enthusiastic off the bat. Although I can be expressive, it takes quite a bit of time to really pull it out. Interest-wise, I’ve always been very creative. I grew up loving to draw in my spare time, starting by trying to replicate animations that I liked without tracing them and eventually progressing into creating my own designs. Near the end of high school, I started drawing my own fashion designs. I also LOVED doing logic puzzles and origami. My favorite game to play in my spare time is Sudoku. I’ve always enjoyed working with numbers, and it keeps my mind sharp.
