Today we’d like to introduce you to Kerrie Patterson-Brown.
Kerrie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am a former collegiate athlete (played basketball for Texas A&M University). I married my college sweetheart, former Texas A&M linebacker, and a professional football player, Reggie Brown. Reggie’s second year in the NFL he went for a routine tackle and he broke his neck on the field. His life changed in an instant. He did not know what to do with himself. He suffered severe depressions for over 10 years because he lost his identity on the field.
Fast forward- for the past seven years, I pursued opening a charter school that focuses on the professions within athletics. I want kids to know that there are more opportunities in sport other than just playing the game, coaching, athletic administration, sports medicine, and sports media.
This past year, we opened Legacy the School of Sport Sciences, the first charter school in the state of Texas that focuses on the professions within athletics. We teach kids about the business and science of sport.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Ha ha ha, no, not at all. But I know that God planned it like this. It was a seven-year journey to receive the charter from the state and acquire the financial support for the facility.
Legacy the School of Sport Sciences – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We are a school that focuses on the professions within athletics. 97% of our students on campus are athletes. We use the student’s interest in sports and teach their content courses through the industry.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The last day of the first year! We made it through year one. Now, we have an understanding of how we can grow as a campus.
There are two things, God’s Blessings and the last day of the first year.
God Blessed me with a great team, our admin team is amazing. The worked tirelessly to make our first year memorable. I would not have survived without them.
