Meet Kerry Kirk of Kerry Kirk Photography in Central

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kerry Kirk.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Kerry. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My passion for photography began in my early twenties. Upon graduating from the University of Texas, I relocated to Houston and had many opportunities to travel–both professionally and personally. I spend the next decade traveling to over 51 countries and photographing architecture, landscapes, wildlife and occasionally people.

Upon having children, (three boys within 18 months) my traveling was much curtailed. And I didn’t do much with my camera for about three years.

But as our children entered school, I found myself with a surprising amount of free time! I was asked by a friend to photograph a home he had built for his portfolio. I was hesitant at first because interior photography is quite a different beast. But after many hours of practice and a serious equipment upgrade, I agreed, and a new passion was born. And happily, this one is much more compatible with my current lifestyle.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road for me has been relatively smooth. I have definitely benefitted from social media–specifically Instagram. As a photographer, the platform is a dream and serves as a walking portfolio–so much so, that business cards have become almost obsolete. Aside from my first three clients, most of my work has come from contacts I initially made via Instagram. The opportunity to virtually network within an industry that is so visual has been vital to my growth and success.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Kerry Kirk Photography – what should we know?
I am a photographer specializing in portfolio work for interior designers, builders, and architects. I have always had an interest in architecture and design–which marry perfectly with photography.

As a photographer, I strive to highlight the unique aspects of design and architecture that give an image both a visual an emotional appeal. A successful image should make the viewer feel connected to it. I have built wonderful relationships with many clients and it is so gratifying to promote their work in a way that provides them with additional exposure, followers and ultimately new business.

And very recently, I have had the opportunity to photograph food, which has been a surprisingly fun and creative endeavor. Twice this December I have been featured in the food section of the Houston Chronicle.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I am passionate about my work which is pretty obvious in the field. I can’t hide the adrenaline rush I get from making an image. My equipment allows my clients to view the photos on an iPad as I work.

My design and chef clients, in particular, enjoy this collaborative process as we work together to stage each scene and capture the essence of a space or dish.
