Meet Kevin Mugabo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Mugabo.

Hi Kevin, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started my photography journey in 2016. I loved seeing pictures of light trails aka long exposure. So, I decided to buy a digital camera so that I can learn how to do it. After weeks of practice, I had a good understanding of how long exposure works.

After 8 months of doing long exposure and urban photography, I was encouraged by my close friends and family to get into portrait photography.

Around June of 2017, I decided to join a model & photographer meet up that was happening in downtown. It felt good working/collaborating with models.

After the meet up, I posted a few portraits that I captured. I received a lot of positive feedback and from there, I decided to keep improving my work. I tried to join as many meet ups as I could but unfortunately in 2020 due to Covid, we couldn’t meet anymore.

If I have a project or something new that I want to try, I just call my friends to help me out.

Today I shoot: Urban, Street, Nature, Portrait as well as events.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It’s not easy to practice especially for me because I shoot multiple types of photography. It’s overwhelming!

In 2019 I decided to take a little break from everything as well as social media but when I came back in 2020, COVID-19 also happened.
Meaning I only had to shoot urban and long exposure and/or light painting.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a self-taught photographer.

As a gig; I shoot portraits for different occasions. I shoot headshots for business, graduation, engagement, maternity, event and sometimes I do weddings.

And as a hobby; I take pictures of the city. Especially at night because nothing beat the beauty of Houston at night. I also take pictures of nature as well as abstract photography.

What’s next?
My plan is to acquire as much skills as I can. Degrees in both my line of work.
